I saved Ashley pre-ME2, but now (at least for my canon Shepard) I always save Kaidan for two reasons -
A) My character was pursuing a relationship with Ashley. No, I didn't leave her behind because I was ninjamanced, but because it adds an incredible amount of depth and drama to the story to have your LI die due to your choices.

Kaidan always gets sent to arm the nuke. As players, we have hindsight - we know Saren will show up at our location regardless if we backtrack to the nuke or head up the AA tower. However Shepard doesn't know that - arming the nuke was absolutely pivotal if the mission was to succeed, thus, Shepard had to ensure that the bomb was armed.

Yeah yeah I know you don't have to save the person you sent with the distraction team to rescue the salarians themselves. But that would be metagaming in addition to making no damn sense, which I limit unless I am dead set on getting a different result.
The STG are know for their adaptibility and resourcefuless - its not hard to imagine that they had an escape plan set in motion (a plan B if the Normandy could or did not make it, like a drop shuttle for example) before the assault began. Plus, whoever was left at the AA tower went out like a big guddam' hero - they probably sacrificied themselves to give the the others a chance to escape.

I save Ashley - I don't see why she should throw herself on her sword to clear her Grandfather's name.
Plus I always see it as putting Kaiden out of his misery - the whole L2 implant thing.
Umm...Kaidan willingly keeps the L2 implants; he's not tortured by the decision, as he can opt for a better implant if he deems the act necessary.
