As maleshep i saved Kaidan one time, after that i always save Ashley. The reasons are many, but in short i like her character better (plus sometimes she is a LI for my shepard), it made the most sense to me as she was with the bomb, and i like the rescue scene more when you save her. Kaidan is ok but i don´t find him much interesting, also, after meeting Jacob i liked him better than Kaidan and serves well as his replacement.

I saved Williams because she was with the remaining Salarian STG forces.

How's that?

If she dies, she gets to redeem her family name, and posthumously earns medals from like every race out there practically, according to the news in ME2. Through this any future Williamses would have no problem advancing in the Systems Alliance military.

So I don't see why Ashley's death would make it worse for her family, well except that she's gone.

Interestingly enough, during my initial canon playthrough, I did not save the person I liked most, which was kaidan. Despite the fact that I despized Ashley for her attitude towards Aliens, I chose her over Kaidan. There were a few reasons for this:

1. You may interpret this as slightly sexist, but I chose to save Ashley over Kaidan because she was female. I still carry that 'social' inclination that saving a woman would be more appropriate.

2. Ashley was a **** who wanted to martyr herself, and was ready to blow herself skyhigh. I didn't like that, and I didn't feel she deserved the opportunity.

3. Losing Kaidan felt more dramatic because of this. I liked him more, but he had to be sacraficed. Thus, I felt really emotional after returning to the normandy. Blame the awesome music that accompanied it!

Aside from that however, I do have playthroughs where I saved Kaidan aswell.

Kaidan.

I have saved Ashley before, just for something different, but Kaidan is the one that makes the most sense to me.

He's the tech guy, so he goes with the bomb while Ash goes with the salarians.  Then Geth hit the bombsite.  Kaidan says that he arms the nuke and to get out of there, but Shepard's entire mission is to make sure that bomb goes off.  These are Geth, technologically advanced synthetics with the power of an even more advanced machine race behind them.  How can Shepard know that they won't be able to disarm the bomb?  It's a risk she can't take.

Basically, Shep's primary objective is to protect that bomb.  Saving the salarians on the AA tower is very, very secondary.  My Shepards will always go back to ensure that the bomb is protected, and since Kaidan is the one who makes the most sense to send with the bomb, he's the one who ends up saved.

Kaidan. He outranks Ashley and is also a biotic. I love Ashley, but my by-the-book Shepard can't save a lower ranking soldier over a high ranking biotic.

I went to the AA tower, I find it more important that we can fly away rather than the nuke going off, because we have already blown that facility to hell, and Saren won't be able to salvage that base any time soon. Plus, Ash and co had been holding the line throughout the whole mission asking for us to hurry up/help. I figured their numbers were low and they were bending a bit, and if the Geth got the AA tower back the Normandy is toast. Personally I don't want to go down with the nuke and base. Kaidan starts the detonation process without orders, and essentially is wanting to fall on the sword, and I don't think Ashley should take the consequences for Kaidan's choices. I tell Kaidan goodbye, and go grab Ash, Kirrahe, and co. Neither are my love interest, and I like their characters equally in a platonic sense.

That is my "canon". A more shallow reason would be is, I think the AA tower scene is cooler than the bomb.

I have a shep for every class, and I have saved both three times.

I like them both, but I like Kaidan ever slightly more. and he's easier to justify saving using in game reasons. I still saved Ashley twice, once for a romance and once because it suited femshep in question - I like her I wanted her to be alive at least in some of my games. I have 12 shepards that I'll be importing into ME3, but if I only have to pick 2 favorites, she's alive for one of those 2.

in terms of gameplay, I used Kaidan a lot more then Ash. lift+throw+first aid+decryption+electronics+neural shock+overload all in one squadmate. Ash makes a great tank, but she has no crowd control and with how much I fail at cover mechanics in ME1 - crowd control was a lot more important to me. and he makes fight with Saren super trivial

Kaidan, bros before... Well you know. I like both of them, but I rather have a proper bromance. I got my Shepard's romance already covered, so no need for anymore female energy onboard. Shepard and Kenneth can handle only so much.

I'll save Ash for variety every once in a while but for me its Kaidan all the way.

So far as I know, I'm the only person alive who liked Kaidan more when I found out he was Carth 30 seconds into ME1. The guy, always quoted as a whiner, has never said one thing that I didn't mind or just straight up appreciated. Not even as a romantic thing, Kaidan's just my ultimate bro. I've no problems with Ashley at all but being forced to choose, Kaidan is my preferred option

I have a Kaidan romance where I saved him, but generally I end up saving Ash. For me it's just whoever I want with whatever Shepard going into ME2. I like them both so there's no real "I saved her because he's annoying" thing.

Mostly I save Ash because my main Shep is romancing her. Plus I can justify saving her however I want to in my imagination. Like...the AA tower was closer... ha!

For my first play-through in a long time... I carried over a save from ME 1:  An Earth-born Ruthless, Renegade (Bee-otch) Vanguard named Bobbie, whose cold demeanor and stone-cold, calculating reputation earned her the fearful respect of her crew.  Many years ago, during the early stages of her career, she once executed a Red Sand smuggler right in front of his wife and children, because he double-crossed her.  This act, earned her the nickname of "The widow-maker", and it soon became whispered that she wouldn't hesitate to execute anyone who double-crossed her, or that she felt in any way, compromised her mission. Anywhere she went, her reputation often greatly preceeded her, and it made even high ranking military and government officials leary of her.  Walking through the corridors of the Presidium, even officers superior to her rank would make a conserted effort to stand clear of her and give her as wide a birth as possible.

Collateral damage, is acceptable if it means the ultimate success of the mission.  Her calculating manner and ruthless efficiency served her well, as it caught the eyes of many of the Alliance brass.  She was recognized by none other than Fleet Admiral Hackett for her efficiency, her ability to command respect, and her leadership abilities.  As well as her amazing mind for military strategy, both in pre-planning and on-the-fly, in the heat of a battle. Squadmates and other officers under her command, may not have liked her personally-- but they certainly respected her and followed any order given without question. With this quality,  she quickly rose through the ranks earning the rank of Commander; soon she was given command of the Alliance's most powerful prototype, SSV Normandy.

During her campaign to stop Saren, she developed close relationships with many of her crew, but none closer than Staff Lieutenant Kaiden Alenko.  When off-duty or between missions, the two could often be seen talking on the mess deck, near Kaiden's station; and so the two officers developed a romantic interest in each other that was kept quiet, but was well-known by the crew.  She seemed to 'soften up and become less ruthless, more human, more caring.' But when faced with a crucial decision in th heat of battle during a mission on the planet Virmire where Saren had a cloning facility, Commander Bobbie Shepard reverted back to her typical patterns, and made the hardest decision of her career: She sacrificed Lt. Alenko leaving him to die in the blast of a nulcear explosion, in order to save Chief Williams, because she felt it was the best way to ensure the success of the mission with as few casualities as possible.   Though the mission was a technical and operational success-- there is now a hole in her heart and a shadow of doubt forever present in the back of her mind.

I've played through Mass Effect 1 three times. The first time Kaidan died, and the second Ashley died. In the third, I accidentally started up a romance with Ashley, and the easiest way to progress in the game without backtracking a few hours was to get Ashley killed, so she had to die.

I think they're both equally uninteresting characters that don't bring much to neither franchise or story, so on my fourth future-playthrough I will probably kill Kaidan. 50%/50%.

Ashley most of the time. Only in two of my playthroughs I saved Kaidan. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a pretty face but I can't kill Ashley especially after romancing her with my Canon Shep. I only killed her with my Renegade because I romanced Liara with that character and I needed a change of pace.
