Saving both Kaidan and Ashley is  that possible? This is the first time I heard about this.

Out of 4 ME1 playthroughs with FemShep I've saved Kaidan every time (romanced him once and stayed loyal in ME2) and just recently started my 5th with MShep and plan on saving Kaidan again. I just...do not like Ashley at all. However, I've tried to reconsider my feelings towards her and might give her a chance in the future if I ever complete playthrough #6.

My first run through had me save Ashley. She survived only because I sent her with the STG as per the game's instructions. It just made sense. I sat there for 3 minutes (it was really quick) thinking about who I should save. The fact that I remembered Kirrahe mentioning that they wouldn't be recognized posthumously for their sacrifice struck a chord with me and made my decision for me. Ultimately it came down to numbers and Kaidan lost because I felt I had to save the most people I could.

Also of note, Kirrahe didn't make it in that play through.

Ashley in every playthrough. Do not need kaidan since I have Liara as biotic.

For my female Shepard is Kaidan, and for the male Shepard it's Ashley.

kaiden dies, 100%. at first it was out of paranoia because liara thought femshep and kaiden might be a couple but eventually it just became habit [not a big fan of ashley either]

seeing kaiden in the default ME2 canon was so unsettling i bought mass effect just to kill him. i wanted to save the council and romance liara too but kaiden was dead. i dont believe in ghosts

Mostly Ash, though I do try to balance it out. On the whole, Ash is probably one of the better scripted characters in the whole series, bringing a lot both to the game and the franchise. She is one of the 'faces' of ME1, and certainly lived up to the full potential of her character.

Her relationship also progressed more naturally. It starts off with her kind of fangirling over Shepard, then stablising out as she gets more serious with her duties. She and Shepard flirt, banter, he teases her over her sister's comments, they discuss family, religion, culture and politics. It FELT like two real people bonding and becoming closer.

Then Virmire happens, their friend and fellow soldier gives his life to ensure the success of the mission. Emotions run high, they mutiny against Udina and steal the ship to chase Saren. They sleep together, beat the bad guy, then settle down to figure out where they go from there....

...only to get interrupted when Shepard gets killed.

In terms of realism, none of the other romances, not even Kaidan or Liara, certainly none of the ME2 romances, come even close to Ashley's story arc. Thus, I usually save her.

I save Kaiden 100% of the time, because I actually like him. Ash annoys me and she hates my love interest. Perfect reasons to choose Kaiden for me.

Saved Ashley.

When it came time to pick someone to babysit the nuke I picked Kaidan because he had a tech background. When both the team on the AA Tower and Kaidan were in danger of being overrun, I decided to continue to the AA Tower because it maximized the amount of people I could potentially save (Ashley, plus the Salarian STG team) and because I figured in a worse case scenario Kaidan could still trigger the nuke.

Kaiden is of higher rank, trained as a tech, and has biotic abilities. He's also more diplomatic when it comes to interacting with non-humans. Quite simply, he's more valuable.

Also, he's far less obnoxious, and doesn't try to awkwardly quote poetry at me or call me "skipper".

I will usually let Ashley go with the salarians and have Kaidan set up the bomb. Then I save Kaidan, because the salarians are the distraction team and, when RPing, I see Shepard deciding to go back for the nuke to make sure that there's no chance of the geth screwing with it.

But I don't do it out of any dislike of Ashley. I like her and find her an interesting character. But from a meta perspective, there's something very satisfying about her dying that way. Someone with the baggage with her family and the discomfort she has with non-humans, giving her life to save a group of them, eventually becoming the first human honored by this group... It feels like a more satisfactory character conclusion than Kaidan getting a scholarship named after him.

Saved Kaiden first time because he was a decent man with a fair-minded view of aliens despite what happened to him. He struck me as a rare fellow that should never be lost.
Saved Ashley on another playthrough because the Mindoir colonist Shepard could not bear to break up her family. More people would have suffered in long run in her mind.
Ack, no matter how ticked off I get at either one I still get indigestion when I have to leave one to die. I don't want Kaiden or Ashley dead. I want them both alive so I can kick their arse for annoying the heck out of me.

The first time, I saved Ashley for romance reasons. Now I just flip the coin.

Saved Ashley on 2/3 runs. For my canon, I saved Kaidan. I'm curious as to what he says about my relationship with Jack and since all three of us have biotic abilities, might bring up some interesting banter between the two.

Its weird to see people save one 100% of the time, if there are any differences between having one or the other in ME3, your missing out. Even if you hate the character, I would think you would save them once, just for the sake of variety or experimentation.

Never romanced either, yet for all my Sheps (excluding one) the one I saved on Virmire was the same gender. Trying to avoid ninjamances I suppose. >:C

I've saved both. The first time, I left Kaidan thinking he could pull off something awesome. He died. The second time, I was thinking about offing Kaidan again because I needed the romance achievement, but then Kaidan glitched and had out of combat shield regen forever, always had 6 bars of shields displayed despite having 3 points in Electronics and wearing Scorpion 1 armor, punched a Krogan through the ground, fought 2 Krogan by himself and won, phased in and out or reality and made the elevators open while they were still in the air, glitched and gave Tali and extra skill point, kept winning against Geth Destroyers by himself, and basically soloed Virmire by himself. Then afterward, he kept being weird, and then on the final boss, he stepped on Saren and punched him to death. The gun disappeared and it just showed Kaidan punching Saren from full health.

I've had a hard time choosing Ashley afterward. Because I always remember that that glitch might come back. I wish that glitch would happen again. It was amazing.

I saved Ashley.. mostly because I romanced her.. but all truth is I couldn't let her die.. kaiden understood so he guarded the nuke for me..

In all my playthroughs (all male shep) I've always saved Ashley.. Just can't bring myself to let her die..

I like them both, but I always save Kaidan because I like him more, he's my Shep's LI and he has a more stable and level headed personality.

(and I still hope that some decades in the future, when we see a remake of ME1, we'll finally have the chance to save them both)

No guy Shep so Kaiden was saved, whether he's a LI or not. Then I whacked him Image IPB instead of Ash (3rd playthrough) for the gal Shep who has no LI whatsoever, officer all the way. I figure the Williams family need to "clean" their name via Ash so I sent Kaiden off with the biggest firecracker ever! Image IPB

My main playthrough I saved Ashley but now I usually save Kaidan.

He is higher in rank and he is a Biotic/Tech (and TIM goes on about how Biotics are important and powerful) so I just assume he is a better and more skilled soldier. Plus he seems like he'd make a better commander and Spectre than Ashley. Ashley seems too emotional driven (which I suppose isn't always bad thing but still.)

Kaidan was alone while Ashley had a lot of salarians with her. Nothing personal against Kaidan but saving many is more important than saving just one.
