OP were you here back in the day when wars were fought over Tali?

Today's Talimancer fandom is a shadow of what they once were. In ye olden days, they filled the general forum with countless topics about weddings or "hybrid" children. Entering their primary topic would drive most people insane. Their secret police squads roamed the forums ready to attack the dissenters, and they would spam any polls that mentioned Tali. Questions like "what does Tali's sweat taste like" were just the tip of the iceberg.

(here see it for yourself http://www.something...cial-forums.php)

Their main topics would go into many hundreds of pages, and when they were closed (to avoid breaking the forums?) there was a state of pure anarchy. Guns, knifes, chains, hammers, fists, it was bloody. Eventually their topic would be reestablished and things would return to normal.

One day Stanley Woo made a brave Stand against the hordes and committed the most thorough purge. Talimancers were quarantined, and forums were searched and weeded out top to bottom, and they never recovered after this.

Songs and legends were written of Stanley Woo's End of the Line that day

First off RE3 ftw, more of a rocket angel guy myself.

Also funny post.

I was there for that.
It was weird and it didn't last.

For every "creepy obsessed Talimancer" There are 5 people who simply like the character.

I'd ask people to stop making these generalizations but hell it's BSN so I'll just sit back and enjoy the chaos.

those may be the fanatics

but the "normal" talimancers wouldn't let me dislike (actually criticize) her or her rommance. They also made many self insert fics featuring the obvious

I might as well try my best to answer this question the best I know how, even given the insults in the question which points to an arrogance of which I won't concern myself. Why do people love Tali? I find the answer quite simple. Is it her bowed legs, or how you most insultingly put it "chicken feet"? No. Is it the mask? to an effect yes, but this is only to provide an air of mystery. Most of us can agree that the fact that her entire body is covered we cannot gauge beauty. And since we can't see her face we can't make assumptions to how she is like through that, so the player relies more on the personality aspect of Tali.

Now this is where what you assume to be a love affair. Most of the Talimancers can agree with me that the admiration and love for her character comes from how her character was represented. She holds the most positive traits of any other character in the game, showing personality and selfish desire to help her people, even if that means sacrificing herself to do so. Another excellent example of her selfishness comes from her desire to be with your character (if you pursue such) She tries to hide it and is nervously happy when you say that you still want to be with her. (This nervousness is also quite a cute action for a character to share showing more humanity (not in the species sense, but more so in the realistic sense than other characters.) Her personality traits are what writers strive to bring to their characters. We have a back-story that is touching and tragic. (Example: Her mother has died and her father didn't love her). Most people who love Shakespeare know the power of tragedy in developing a character. She is a tragic figure who still remains strong in her will to help others. Most of us "weirdos" actually prefer to find a woman with such personality traits. Not physical of which you seem so focused on.

Why do Talimancers jump at people who insult Tali? Well from my experience most of us don't, just more in the line of radicals while others strike more at the fact that it is a support thread and someone says negative comments in it, which don't belong if you are going to support them. So most times that Talimancers attack people for not liking Tali it is normally the result of Troll action in the thread. Now you only focus on Talimancers attacking people for their disapproval of Tali. I have had my fair share of attacks from Liaramancers for only having Liara get shot in my story, though I had no Talimancer attack me for when I burned more than 50% of her body and caused her to lose her hand. Mind you Liara survived. With this alone this debunks your thought that this is exclusively a Talimancer focus.

I might as well address the physical traits of her. Why do such people enjoy the "chicken feet" and masked face? For two simple reasons. 1) The chicken feet make her exotic and different from other characters, much like the Liaramancers enjoy Liara's head tentacles (sorry if this is an insulting statement to Liara fans), Garrus-mancers (if that is what they are called) love his head flanges and his mandibles, Jack's tattoos, Thane's gills(?), and Miranda's proportionally large rump. 2) As for the mask, like stated above, provides mystery and provides the gamer with an opportunity to express their imagination.

Basically we are given an amazing personality with a blank slate of physical appearance, which means, this woman could be any woman in real life as well. These personality traits are what makes her desirable so to look in real life for a Tali-like character it is simply to find a woman who shows selflessness and passion for what she puts her mind to, a will to make sure others are happy over herself, to not be a burden, and to never let go of those that she loves. All of which you can mostly agree with are positive and desirable in any character, male or female.

Any more questions, please ask and I will be sure to answer promptly.

The lines of troll and criticism become blurry in tali threads

some people who have intelligent comments remarking Tali and criticizing her rommance, her school girl attitude towards shepard, and how this can affect a video game community when it comes to rommance. They are marked as Trolls

Then because of a surge of popularity, real trolls do come in and start provoking flame wars and we can never have any nice discussions about Tali. It's quite unfortunate that we end up talking about Tali as hardcore fanboys or as trolls

Which is what tends to happen to any popular character/concept.

I am a Tali fan and yet I freely accept that many do not like her.

I am fine with that because I am capable of understanding that different people like different things.

So to you this has become all black and white with there only being fanboys and trolls? Such disillusioned state is almost humorous to fathom giving the shear false nature of any such black and white truth to anything on this entire planet, given social trends and moderation between divergent prospects of interests. There are plenty moderates of the subject, but only the black and whites will be the most socially seen for their more outburstic trends. Much like the news, we only see the most radicals getting air time because they are the one's talking the loudest, so we see only the most radical fan boys and the most radical of trolls presenting themselves. It is simple social trends.

I was a veteran of the Tali thread wars. I served in a raiding brigade back in 09'

Things you see there that you wish you've never seen

I must say, back in my younger days I thoroughly enjoyed trolling talimancers.

I loved the thrill, the rush, and responding to outbursts of anger. The funny thing was that I could always troll intelligently and I would be given a response of rage and personal attacks

Though now most of my old comrades are now banned or inactive. Those purges hit everyone hard.

Afterwards I had a real intelligent discussion with an ex talimancer, and I was surprised to hear that all the fanatics disappated from the forums and kept mostly in their private group (as suggested by trolls).

I guess we were both idiots back then. It's been a lot mature now than a few years ago haha
