I think Anders is the best possible companion you can utilize if you build him right. He can be a good support character with his heroic aura, haste, heal but also a good damage dealer with the elemental spells. Plus he doesn't die to often even on harder difficulties(although I recommend investing in Constitution at times), except on boss fights because he sticks to back like Varric.
