I'm playing a solo sorcerer on core difficulty in a patched and fixpacked TOB installation. After completing the De'Arnise quest the character goes back to the City Gates because I realized I never got the Trademeet quest from Flydian. The PC enters the city (all protections down from the long walk) and walks up to Flydian. Unfortunately, one of the bands of "random" vampires (I think it was Tanova, Fledge Vamp, and Vamp) is there waiting for him. Long story short - PC is L17 (or 18?) has has ADHW. Upon casting it I get the "auto-pause: spell cast" message. I unpause and immediately get the PC dead cut-scene (that hateful hand!). Because PC's dead, I can't go back and look at the in-game message log to find out what I missed, if anything.
Other potentially important details: I have AoP and have paid for the magic license, so I don't think it could have been cowlies or level drain and besides in either of those instances there would have been more than just an instant death cut-scene.
So, the question is, did PC commit suicide by casting ADHW somewhere and/or somehow he shouldn't have OR was this a bug because ADHW is party-friendly? Please explain why if you think PC committed suicide.
Suicide or bug, you decide

Charm?

Again, I didn't see a message about Charm, or more likely Domination, being sent my way, but at least that is a credible possibility. If that was the source, then the suicide really occurred several minutes earlier when PC arrivied at City Gates and didn't put up at least some cursory defenses.

I agree with AH - the vamps cast one cast of some kind of charm, so if no charm protection and you don't make your save it's curtains. If you are solo it is, anyways. Maybe a globe of invulnerability or spell turning instead of ADHW could have saved you.

Stay away from open areas at night. You will need to figure out ETA for every zone, rest where you are if that means you arrive during daylight hours.

You could also just delay paying the shadow thieves. If you do that, you always get the option to not get involved. Then when the last ambush occurs, pay the shadow thieves.

Or do what I do: Always travel directly to the graveyard if you're traveling from outside of Athkatla. Paradoxically no vampire ambushes ever occur there -- at least until you get back from the Underdark.

@corey - I don't like that option because then you don't get the AoP. Every reduction in casting time for a solo sorcerer is priceless.
@AnonymousHero - that's a great and easy idea to implement. Have to admit I'd never thought of it.
The reality is that PC's demise was a direct result of over-confidence because I was at that point in the game where it becomes easiest for a solo character. It's early and late that are most difficult for a soloist, but it's almost always the middle that gets me in a no reload.

The vampires also do not ambush you if you arrive in the temple district (remember the Shadow Thief seeking sanctuary there?).
Interesting fact; SI:Enchantment blocks a vampire's gaze, because the developers cloned it exactly from the wizard spell Domination (only changed the projectile and casting speed - this is also true for umber hulk gaze)
