I started to implement an arcane eye type power, then decided it would be way too much work for what I would get in return. Still, it may be interesting to think about.
My first take was to summon a follower using the Attach Spell Node creature type, but I couldn't get that to do what I wanted unless I made that a PC. Next I thought it might make sense to summon a stand-in doppelganger of the PC as a "concentrating" follower, then transform the PC into an invisible creature and give it one of the "eyes" appearance types (like the Erinyes eyes f/x). This makes it look kind of like a floating eyeball. The transformed PC could then wander about with the appropriate benefits; essentially an invisible, ethereal, powerless creature. Somehow the transformed PC would need to be inhibited from opening doors or containers, interacting with creatures, transitioning areas, and so forth. At the end of the arcane eye "spell", the PC is returned back to replace the NPC.
The doppelganger would have most of its scripts removed so it would just stand there. (It might need to be paralyzed?) If it gets damaged, a Concentration check is made; upon a failure, the PC is immediately teleported back, receives the damage suffered, and replaces the doppelganger.
What do you think? Is there a better way to do this?

Summon a custom familiar. ( if a familiar is already present make him plot ) Then possess him.
The eyeball would have to be a creature of some sort.
Disable the casting ui and put in a spellhook block.

Yes, implementing this through the familiar/animal companion functionality seems workable. Hmm, I wonder if other classes can have a familiar/companion, at least temporarily? Thanks.
