I see that DAO has a Balder's Gate II Mod (currently only the first part, Irenicus' prison). Not bad, not bad at all. I would LOVE to see the inclusion of an easily addable "engine" to DAO that would introduce D&D into it...now that would rock!!
There is also NWN2, for those who like it.
I basically would love to see a new NWN version come out, one that gives us all that the current one does, with some of the benies of NWN2 (full party control, control of the GUI, etc) with the animations and graphics of DA2!!
Perhaps based on Pathfinder *starts to drool, eyes glaze over, and voice changes to an ever higher pitch*
MOAR NWN! MOAR PATHFINDER! GIVE ME MOAR DA2!!!!!!
All-in-one!

the shield bash, would be so nice to use on Aribeth...
Except that with the graphics of DOA...and a bit of tweaking from community content (nekkid), are you SURE you would want to bash Aribeth with your shield

The world is full of bad games with really pretty graphics - and most recent games have proved that most game designers are about making what will get them the largest amount of money in the short term, rather than making games that we actually want.
That NWN still has a strong community 9 years after release is proof that when a game is published that we -do- want, we'll keep playing it.
If expansions and updates for NWN were still being made, we'd still be buying them.
Unfortunately, the remakes of the game so far (NWN2 and Cryptic's Neverwinter) have just proven my first point - that those with the IP will go after the short term cash rather than making what people want.

Not that I think it is going to lead to another "golden age" of digital D&D products, seeing as they will continue to push 4ed, but it does open the way for another NWN...
Things just got a little more realistic.

While there's some "piston-slap" in the netcode, that is hardly what's responsible for the scalability issues. Single threading the script VM is high on that list. Memory management also has some severe problems. Through observation it's quite clear that they took a lot of shortcuts that are good-enough for single-player but fall apart when subjected to running 24x7 with a large number of unique logins.ShaDoOoW wrote...
The
NWN just needs better client-server protocol in order to be able to
handle more player in one place without lags.
Lag is a funny beast. Right off the top, if the PW's and multiplayer games you're connecting
to are not running on professional hosting, you're at the mercy of the
equipment the operator has on hand. [ I really need to swap out my Belkin ]
All games lag, some just hide it better than others. Even without being perfectly optimal, NWN netcode is one of the lightest protocols out there even today. For a 2001 release NWN does extremely well but the state-of-the-art in client-side prediction and correction has advanced a bit since then.
The difficulty of producing content for NWN2 was not because of lack of talent, it was proprietary lock-in to some very expensive tools (Granny3d, 3DStudio 2006). All they needed to do was to add support for an open or well understood format (eg. DAE,FBX) and the NWN2 custom content community would have grown significantly. Hobbyists will rise to the occasion, but not if the tools cost tens of thousands of dollars.ShadowM wrote...
Well like others I think if they did a remake I like it not to have the greatest graphics. This is a double edge sword. You get nicer graphics but you slow custom content, might slow performance with pw mutiplayer. Look at NWN2 they really hampered a lot of CC at the start. They got better, but it still hard to jump in and do animations for the hobby creator. ...

Word.
Best explanation in less words one will not find!
If one needs any sort of "proof", just look at the CC for DAO & Co...bursting at the seams!

The game is fine as-is for someone who only does singleplayer modules so I can't speak on the multiplayer stuff.
