The chest near the two Keepers is the "dont touch" chest. I believe she makes it pretty obvious as well not to poke around it the first time you try...maybe thats why they dislike you.

I traded some silver ring I found in a ruin (no idea which one) for the acorn and left to turn it in. After that the dumb mage won't talk to me anymore so I can't trade for the helm or book.

You must not get caught stealing from them (or anyone really) to keep your reputation untarnished. I cleaned out everyone's pockets and nobody was the wiser. Did the quests and got the promise of help fighting the blight. (Lanaya's a pretty elf even though she looks all of 15.)

There are several things you can get prior to meeting the Hermit to trade with him

1 - the reward from the love struck elf for doing that quest (book for me since I convinced her to marry him)
2 - Scarf from the werewolf
3 - necklace made from the hallah horn from doing that quest.  I didn't have enough Survival to actually diagnose the hallah, so I lied and said it was suffering.  She kills it and gives you the horns, which you give to the merchant to make you a pendant.

So technically you'll have enough to trade for all 3 items.

What Alphram said, you can have all items without killing anyone.

On my next run I'll try to kill them both.

The Tree has a ! mark over it and jus say somit like "Well Met, you havn't left the forest yet"

and the Hermit say " you've done it now, now youve done it" so I can't finish things off,.. I got the acorn

and the Helm (I think it was) but theres still one item,.. there nothing in the stump so I can't get him to attack me,.. and the tree does nothing either

I too like the tree :)

My PC is a human noble, and she cleaned out every chest she could, was scolded for trying the forbidden one, and still had no problems with the dalish, including the merchant. She didn't pick-pocket anyone though.

She never slept with anyone, but brought the lovers together. What can I say, she's the type that has a soft spot for sad romances. That got her the book, which in turn got her the acorn. After my PC gave the acorn to the tree, she couldn't fight the hermit any longer, even though she reached for the stump.

If none of those (scarf, ring, bood, necklace) are options, then leaving the dalish quest til later, or trying with a different party are valid choices, I think.

My latest PC was a misanthropic city Elf.  Misanthropic for a good reason, you see!  Anyways, he basically shat upon everone and everything he touched except for Elves.  He had a soft spot for Elves.

That doesn't mean he was a stand-up citizen...  He still slept with the hunter's chick, he was heartless to the guy who lost his wife (but he told him!) and he diagnosed the Haala.  He even sided with the Elves and slayed the werewolves without knowing...erm caring about the true reason of the curse.  After he slept with the Dalish chick he said "Don't worry about it I was just sampling the goods, she's all yours now." or something to that effect.  The panzy Elf ran away sobbing.  What a wuss.

He pick pocketed everyone with a name, and he stole loot from anything and everything.  I doubt he could be any meaner to the Dalish without actively slaying them all.  Yet he still had no trouble with any of the Dalish treating him as anything other than a saviour.  Go figure.
