I am not 100% on this, but I think he doesn't work one day - Sundays? Because I have found him in the middle of the night and him not there in the middle in the day as the OP said. In any case he's not "gone" permanently you will find him again if you visit him later.

Yeah, he hasn't missed a day since. I was afraid I'd done something to make him angry, but I guess not. Still haven't found anywhere to sell my bolts though . . .

I think you should not check the light but rather the time. I think he's away from 22:00 to 6:00 or close to those values. Sometimes it's still light outside at those hours.

For the bolts try somewhere that specialises in magic - both Thalantyr and Sorcerous Sundries work for me. Not sure whether the chap outside Durlag's Tower also buys them.

Thalantyr will buy my arrows, but not my bolts. The Erdane guy at Durlag's Tower won't buy them eitehr. I don't think I've gotten to Sorcerous Sundries yet, I'm still in Coldwood.
