Just been doing the Blackpowder Promise quest, gotten to the last zone with the Tal'vashoth Saarebas that spawns in wave 2. I've been looking at all over and there's no suggestions on decent tactics for it. I'm attempting it on Nightmare and it's just infuriating me, not just for the mad AoE attack it has and the fact that every time your party closes it teleports away, but also because is it just me, or does this guy (and Blood mages for that matter) have the ability to completely ignore LoS? I'll often be completely tucked around a corner from these casters and somehow they will manage to snipe me through the walls with their AoE's.

How the hell do you beat the damn thing? I can't even lay a finger on it before it pings away and then AoE's me to hell, and I can't afford to just chase it around like a headless chicken 'cos all the other bloody ranged NPC's are picking me off slowly while i do. I can't hide from it and LoS pull because it gives no ****s and apparently has x-ray vision, what do you do?

It always spawns in the same spot. That corner infront of the furthest right stair case.

The second it spawns (a little bit into the second wave) just crowd control and kill it. It's not very strong and can't teleport if it's properly CC'd.

You also want to use cold and nature weapons.
What level, class, and party setup do you have?

You could get your mages to try using either winter's grasp or cone of cold- preferably brittling it. Otherwise petrify and horror could also work. Grav rings etc are a bit of a waste. If you pull off a brittle you can almost instant kill it if you have an archer's lance or assassinate CCC (not sure if you can get it by that level). Otherwise rogue spike damage talents will do the trick (auto-crits take advantage of the +50% critical damage).

Rogues and warriors can just use spike damage coupled with elemental nature weapons (beraht's revenge and desdemona's blade respectively). Any spike damage will deal lots of damage and lots of force, providing all the CC you need to stop it flying off. e.g. Twin fangs, assassinate, vendetta, or explosive strike; Shield bash, assault or scatter

What also works is getting Varric to pinning shot it.

I'm running with a level 10 Spirit Healer Mage, I respecced for the fight to take Winter's Grasp, Cone of Cold, Stonefist and Petrify for offensive and CC. I also took Aveline, Fenris and Anders (though I think Fenris may have been a mistake to be honest). The issue, however, isn't what to do when I reach the Saarebas, it's reaching the sodding thing in the first place. Yes, it has two spawn points, but they're miles apart from each other with no common line of sight. And the Saarebas simply ignores the LoS issue and just snipes you regardless. And by the time I've managed to drag myself from one point to the other, the Saarebas just pulls a giant trollface and pings away again. Not to mention all those ranged Tal'vashoth smacking me while I'm busy running backwards and forwards. But that's my main issue: I can't reach the Saarebas, but it can reach me. If I could just catch the damned thing it'd be no problem.

EDIT: And no, I can't catch it before it first teleports either. I tried, and even if I catch it with a Petrify at the first possible instant, if it's even started the teleport animation yet, it's gone regardless, and doesn't interrupt. I just can't nuke it if I can't catch it, and apparently the issue isn't mutual.

EDIT 2: Really makes me wish I was still a rogue with Vendetta. Damn I loved that ability...

EDIT 3: Ok, just tried again, had to do trickle pulling and it worked! I had the Saarebas, everything was all wonderful and shiny, it was about to die, and... game crashes. *tears hair out*

I'd also recommend Varric or Sebastian here. They're decent for crowd control (to keep the fighters off your back), and there are places where they can attack the saarebas without having to hoof it up the stairs to the platform (only to have it teleport back across the cave).

This fight ended up being stupid hard for some reason (I'm not sure how anybody makes it through unscathed until they know exactly how the fight progresses).

I hate this encounter, because besides that serebas it is easy. But then it can turn the entire fight in seconds.

End of the day all you need is to catch it the second it spawns, hold it in the easy initial position and kill it before it recovers.

This means Horror, pinning shot, stun, knockdowns etc. Worth disabling tactics on these skills so your companions are ready to instantly use them the second the serebas appears.

The Saarebas doesn't spawn until some things die I think. Just run everyone up to the commander and take him out. If you tuck yourself far back enough or into the cubby, you can kill all the first spawns without attracting the Saarebas' attention. After that you can save and the rest of it should be very manageable.

Makes you feel for the poor baddies when Grav Ring + Firestorm hits huh. lol.

This fight is royally hard on nightmare. Try using Hold Position and ptting a companion with petrify or horror in a good spot to instantly CC the saarebas.

It helped for me that i had merril & myself as mages, merril had paralyze (if you cast it from pause as soon as he spawns, as its an insta cast he shouldnt dissapear), then i send everyone to wail on him, right before the para dissapeasr i petrify, after that crushing prison, by then he's dead mostly. But yes that fight took me a lot of retries on nightmare, but once you get used to kiting about, and figure out the moment he spawns it gets pretty doable, also it helps to keep manual control of your cc'er until after he dies, this gives you the chance to cast as fast as possible without having to wait for an attack or another cast animation to end.
