Hi all, currently smashing my head on my desk.

I have a gtx 280, i7 920, vista 64, Gigabyte EX58 UD3R mobo and 3gb ddr3 ram. System was running 110% before bought digital version of DA through Steam.

Before installing DA, I updated my video drivers to the current version 191.107. Installed game, made all 3 characters and cannot play for more then 30 seconds on each before DA crashes to desktop with the icon in task bar saying 'Display driver has stopped working' or something and it mentions 'nvlddmkm'. Also my screen is pixelated too.

So I have reverted back to the 186.## drivers then upgraded to beta drivers all while using a program to clean out any remaining files and following some guides on how to remove video drivers and I still cannot play this game, even on mimimum settings with everything turned off.

I highly doubt my GPU is dead as I was plaing other bioware 3d games 1 hour before. All drivers are up to date on my PC with only 60 of 320gb being used. Other games work and have never had a problem with this PC until today.

Any thoughts?

I have the similar issue in Windows 7 64 bit.. I don't get CTD, but a reset of my drivers (screen goes black for a few seconds then the game comes back and I can keep playing although the frequency of the reset keeps going up if I don't exit the game then return).

I'm lucky since I still have dual boot (XP) and in XP with same drivers (although they're 32bit), this issue does *not* exist.

so if you have XP, you're in luck :) if not, I'm still waiting on an answer on this. i also tried drivers 190.68 (same problem), and the beta 195.55 (worst, I get CTD instead of just the drivers resetting).

Good luck.

Unfortunately no xp cd's anymore. Stuck with Vista 64. Guess I have to wait until Nvidia/BioWare make a fix. It's a shame, was really looking forward to trying this 'game of the decade' out as a self birthday present :(

Did you try installing/running the game with the "Run as administrator command"?

The same would apply for when you installed the Nvidia drivers.

Also are you overclocking the video card and have you checked the heat sink for dust bunnies? Pixelation can be caused by overheating. If your card is clean, you should be able to overide the fan so it stays on at 100%, in the event you are having a heat issue.

Hi Zacrober.

I do run everything as admin. Everything is new and running stock and I am only in the game for 3 minutes before the problem. I have started the PC after it had sit for 8 hours, load DA:O, quick make a character in 10seconds and it still crashes. I doubt its heating issue as I have played other games where I could hear the fan going much harder then it does in DAO.

I am no techie, but I think its either I dont have enough ram? (3gb) or its the game itself, although I have an IDENTICAL systems as other and they can play and I cant. A full reinstall did nothing as well.... :(

I completely missed that you had a steam version. Did you try and validate the install? Sometimes with Steam you end up with a currupt install, validating will check all of the files and if something is messed up re-download and fix that specific issue.

However, pixelation usually points to a video issue.

Just did the validate and defrag (it wasnt fragmented though), tried again and still same problem. I know its my vid card, I have done full installs using driver sweeper going back to drivers from april, to the new drivers to the beta drivers, all installed properly. I dont know what I can do with the vid card settings for this game. Just played Mass Effect then Modern Warfare 2 and were perfect on high settings...

As soon as I click 'ok' the difficulty level window after character creation it shows me a loading screen, then I hear a sound like a page turning then screen goes black, crashes to desktop with icon saying video has stopped responding then I get all these pixels blinking on my screen where I then have to reboot. Only with this game I might add, never before :(

1) you wont get your money back - so forget that idea

My system specs are similar to yours and I have 0 issues with DAO.

191.107 (and earlier versions) have BAD profile entries for DAO and will cause crashes. This can be fixed by going here:

http://www.nvidia.co..._update_v3.html

this doesn't update the drivers but the xml file and profiles that controls how the drivers work with each game. I used to get the vid driver crashes with DAO until I applied that nvidia "patch"

in a few weeks new WHQL drivers from nvidia are coming out that will work with DAO MUCH better

IF that doesn't work try one of the beta drivers... but a new WHQL driver is coming very soon

Thanks tallbear. So I did all that and the only thing that changes is when it used to crash to desktop saying video card stopped responding, now I get blue screen of death where is does a memory dump then reboots the PC. Any other apps that can change something on my vid card?

If you're hardware savvy and have access, you can try swapping out a video card from another system, if it's not integrated into your motherboard. I'd also suggest checking your motherboard chipset drivers, to make sure you have everything properly installed.

Edit: If another video card works, but the current one doesn't, it's likely a broken card, versus something software related.

this problem has been going on for a looooooooong time so i wouldnt expect drivers to fix anything.... i have this problem on my laptop that has an 8600m gt it only does it on a few games like DA:O and halo 2.... so far i have not found a fix.... try switching out the video card if you hvae a spare cause its most likely hardware related

I doubt its the card (hardware). I believe 100% its a software problem: Drivers or the game itself.
