I've been playing Neverwinter Nights since 2004 and during that time I have spent many hours tinkering with the Aurora Toolset, as most people have. But I have never released anything substancial.

I've recently been hit with a spark of inspiration for a module I would love to develop, but now that the game has been available for almost ten years and the community has dwindled, is it worth pouring countless hours into development? Is anything I produce likely to find a decent audience?

I am well aware that anything I develop should be for my own benefit and enjoyment, but I am the type of person who likes to also have my creations enjoyed by others and I would hate to create something only to find the entire potential audience have dwindled to the point of obscurity and are now playing the latest shiny game instead of the timeless classic that is Neverwinter Nights.

My basic question is this: Now that Neverwinter Nights and its modding community are in their twilight years, is it still worth developing brand new ideas or would my time and energy be better invested elsewhere?

I look forward to hearing from you. :)

yes, there's more usable content now than there has ever been and PC's are powerful enough to use it.

Someone will play your module. It might not be the 10,000 downloads as the golden days but rather, 50 or 250.

I'm still building myself, even though a good chunk of the audience from the second part of the trilogy have no doubt moved on and even more still from the first part. Will the third and final part of the tale be played by 10,000 or more like the first part? Nope.

But I'll finish it because it's my story to finish and because I still enjoy it.

FP!

Depends. If you're thinking of dedicating massive time to your module, then you'd probably want to create it for NWN2 instead. If it's a small or medium side project you've got going, then by all means, continue.

Why NWN2? Doesn't it offer less possibilities than NWN?

When we used to be able to find statistics for nwn vs nwn2 then nwn always did have more players (tho this was online statistics, but it was the only ones available afaik). I'd think with the game now available on GOG.com and the hard core community who just love this game to bits you will find players, but as FP said, not tens of thousands of them. I would be amazed if you found it ignored tho if that is your worry.

Have fun :)

It's still good and more people play it. Depends on what you want really. If you're developing a new IP with a in-depth background, history and lore in it, wouldn't you want loads of people to play the mod? There are certain things which NWN2 does better than NWN1 as well. I suppose it's down to preference in the end.
