Princess Mononoke, Akira, Spirited Away, Kino's Journey, Elfen Lied (so sad), just some off my head, I don't even watch anime that much. There's a lot of really moving animes out there that make you think.

It's not strong kind of dislike, but it's still there. Just can't take any of it seriously or enjoy it in anyway.

Two more examples aimed for people who particularly think anime is all about hyper childern - though these two particular examples are on the creepy side - it's likeable to many including myself (the second show is actually in part aimed against the idolizing of too-far-from-reality anime and stuff)

http://www.animecrun...gent-episode-1/

Light-hearted but mature shows can be found under the tag "Josei" though. I'd recommend Honey and Clover and Nodame Cantabile.

PS - will definitely stop harassing the forum with my recommendations...

I recommend Gunslinger Girls.

Don't watch it if you have problems watching a child get murdered, commiting suicide or killing people.

Nodame Cantabile was great more so the manga.

Paranoia Agent was great Satoshi Kon knew how to make something good.
No keep up with the recommendations even if I don't care for some of them, someone here will.:)

Oh and Melrache go watch Cowboy Bebop now.

The guy who made Monster, Naoki Urasawa has done a lot of great work.

I really love YAWARA! most out of his work even if it's not his "best" it still was fun and had a lot of heart to it.

DBZ has so many moments of pure badassery, it's ridiculous. Goku going Super Saiyan for the first time, Trunks going Super Saiyan and cutting Frieza in half, Vegeta going Super Saiyan and whipping Android 19's ass, Piccolo fusing with Kami and battling Cell, Piccolo battling Android 17 (my favorite fight in the whole series), Gohan going Super Saiyan 2 and blasting Cell into oblivion...

...man, that show is awesome. Even with all of the boring filler and terrible voice acting (both of which Kai fixes), it still shines.

Kai did not fix anything it still has filler and for being what Toei calls the "true Dragon Ball manga experience" it sure did skip the first 16 volumes and did not even cover the last 7. Oh well in 20 years they can fix it or mess it  up again.=]

Dragonball Kai was a remake of the anime Dragonball Z, that's why the first 16 volumes of the Dragonball maga aren't included (because DBZ didn't have them too).

Dragonball Kai was a huge flop, that's why the last 7 volumes were never done. They stopped with the show early because no-one was watching it.

Actually, I think I'm equally interested in finding out which from my recommended anime people find bad, and for which reasons... (equally to giving an overview of some genres in the anime scene).

As I said Toei called Kai a "true Dragon Balll manga experience" so it should have been all of the manga story with no filler, with you know, new animation not just "HD" over DBZ.

I would not say it was a huge flop, it was more like Toei wanted Toriko on tv with One Piece so you have to cut out what was in the way, now it is true Dragon Ball is not as big now as it was in Japan way back but you really can't say no one was watching Kai, it came on back to back with One Piece.

Lain is awesome, I second that.
Also if you're fan of horror, in particular vampires. I recommend Blood+
Made by the same studio who did the Ghost in the Shell series(I.G) And that is one that def doesn't fit into the stereotypes

You have to take the blinders off. It's easy not take another culture's art seriously if you don't approach it with an open mind and learn a bit of the medium's history.

Here is a good start to the history.

And a great quote from him.

No Melrache has a point. It IS hard to take anime seriously. Just look at half the crap they shovel out most of the time.

I mean MOST of the stuff out there can be summed up by "Its in a High School", about a "Passive Protagonist", surrounded by "Stereotype women".

I see a pic of a random bad anime with a bad fansub that really does nothing for me.

What you can't take Barefoot Gen seriously? or Cowboy Bebop? or Wolf''s Rain? Hey what about Bioware games? they are not that much different from anime.=]

Oh if you go by the what "MOST"(and you are wrong about that too) there is view, it is hard for me to take you seriously. Best way to stop that is to go read up on Tezuka and read/watch his stuff.

My thing is that I don't usually seek anime out and most of the stuff that makes it to the States seems terrible to me (Naturo, DBZ, etc.). I grew up with Sailor Moon, so I love it by default and can still watch it endlessly, but I recognize how terrible of a show it really is. Saint Seiya is the only anime I've ever encountered that had really great writing (not to say that good writing in anime doesn't exist).

Although now that you mention it, I DID watch a few episodes of Ouran High School Host Club at the urging of a good friend. I actually liked it a lot. Not sure why I stopped watching it though. I should probably get back to it.

Any suggestions for really well written anime that I can find in the States? My boyfriend is trying to make me watch Death Note. Is it any good?

Ha anyone who hate's anime hates it for the fact it's Japanese. It's like saying you hate music because some terrible "artist" like Lady Gaga is famous. There are both good and bad animes and then there are true masterpieces. If anyone can seriously watch Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo or better any Studio Ghibli film and enjoy it then please say why.

I like your recommendations. I'm not an anime junkie but I do watch some and I own most if not all Studio Ghibli movies I just love them. Even started to show it to my younger nieces they just love My Neighbor Totoro.

Yes, yes it is. Here is a list of some great anime shows.

Cowboy Bebop is one of the best anime shows ever imo. Shinichirō's use of music in his work is always amazing and well I love the 60's style rock and jazz music. If there was one anime you should watch THIS is it.

Samurai Champloo another anime with Shinichirō directed. Just as great as Cowboy Bebop but doesn't take itself too seriously. It's mix of hip-hop, humor and story telling is great. If you want something great but fun Champloo is best. It's actually LOL funny especially the baseball episode.

Mushi-shi, now is a beautiful anime. A lot more slow paced so don't watch it if that bothers you. There is absolutely no fighting which a nice change of pace. It's really enjoyable and I can never get over how gorgeous the show is. One of my favorites.

Ergo Proxy like eroeru recommend should be watched. A strong female lead is always good after all but it's the world I cared for with the fantastic animation it really shows off how terrible the world is and who doesn't love scifi?

Samurai Champloo and Mushi-shi are available on Netflix even if you have an account.

I have to mention Hayao Miyazaki. This man has made some of the best anime films ever and some of my favorites. Anything he has directed is always amazing. If the faces are really what people hate then just look at any link below. They are not exaggerrated for cuteness or w/e they look good, really good.

Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
Ponyo

Unfortunately I think only Howl's Moving Castle is available on Netflix the others I own on dvd/bluray this is only  Hayao Miyazaki's work (there is more!) here are some more anime films.

Akira is a fantastic piece of work unfortunately it takes 6 volumes into a 2 hour film but still probably one of the best anime films ever. It's very gorey but so good you might be confused but the attention to detail and especially sound is astounding.

Perfect Blue is only 80 minutes but is nontheless a great watch. This is about a girl who was apart of a popular J-pop group who decides to turn to acting. This upsets fans and well a stalker. Good psychological thriller and should be watched reguardless of how you feel about anime.

Tokyo Godfathers three homeless people find an abandoned baby in the trash and clues to the parent(s) can't remember. This is a very moving movie.

Some of the covers to the movies.

*Here's hoping you actually look in the thread again.*

Well DBZ and Sailor Moon were made bad over here so meh.

As for Death Note it is good but the last 10 episodes are really weak but I say it's worth it also you should see Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain.

And since you like Saint Seiya I would add YuYu Hakusho and One Piece too because thay have the same type of feel in the action and drama.

Hope that helps.

I'm very picky when it comes to anime, but the most I've seen were utterly ridiculous. Most anime start off great then end terribly as far as story is concerned, the sexually humor is just stupid and excessive, in order to make a guy look attractive they're designed to look like girls, huge boobs on 13 year old girls, most anime are over dramatic and have cliché dialogue.
