I absolutely distrust anime and never was able to understand how some of my friends could enjoy watching it. No offense.

With the exception of Ghost in the Shell, the rest of it is crap. Childish, pretentious garbage.

Nothing like sweeping statements..

I gave it a fair shake and explored quite a few titles. Whether its cultural differences, or som, ething lost in the translation but what I've seen is bad, and poorly executed. Not because its animated, but because the writing insists its saying something important when it isnt, other than that its usually geared towards children and I have no interest in sh*t like that. Ghost in the shell is different though and thats why I can stomach it.

Well as has been said before numerous times, there's a lot of crap in any art form. Not every film is as good as Blade Runner or 2001: A Space Odyssey, you know. Personally I enjoyed Berserk every bit as much as the former.

Unless its cyberpunk I really don't care too much for sci-fi films. I'm actually very surprised that I liked Mass Effect as much as I did since I've never been fond of space traveling heroes off to fight the galaxy, but it had its charm in story telling which made me stick with it.

I agree, every genre of entertainment has more than its fair share of crap, but I've seen too much of the things that weren't well produced to care to give anything else a try.

Distrust? Did anime turn on you at some point or do something suspicious?

There is definitely a handful of decency and another handful of excellence amid the mountainous region of mediocrity.

If there's any anime I love, it gotta be Hellsing Ultimate. Can't say I dislike other anime's, just I don't feel strong about them.

I prefer the first because in it, music isn't some mystical brain-washing power. And the designs of everything was more sensible to boot.

Macross 7....yeauch. Just the name makes me feel nausiated.

That's a rather broad statement to make. You watched all the anime ever made?
No?
Then don't make stupid statements. I've sen anime better than GITS. I wonder what you even watched?

In Macross Plus the music (from A.I. "Sharon Apple") had no more power than music in the real world
(i.e. selling records...filling seats at concerts)
(Sharon's special abilities came from being cybernetic and psychotic not from her singing)

I don't watch anime, takes too much time and uses to destroy the feeling of what the author was trying to represent.

The mangas are a whole different story.

I forgot to mention Akira. I did find that to be pretty interesting.

From what I've seen of COwboy Beebop, its not "more serious" than Ghost in the Shell. I jsut didn't find the subject matter that interesting. The Jazz music was a nice touch, but it wasn't interesting. The others I checked out, and were quickly deleted from my hard drive:

Hellsing
Vampire Hunter D
Full Metal Alchelist
Durara
Fooly Cooly
Conan
I forget the name of one, but it involved highschool kids dressed in Kimonos hunting monsters in another dimension.
The other I can't remember was a world were all the weapons doubled as musical instruments. There was a guy who had a guitar that was also a sword I think. There was a girl with batons that were also guns, or something to that affect.

That's from the top of my head. there were a few others, but my level of enthusiasm was at about the same level
as it was when I saw those above. Just not interesting and it almost always read like an attempt to shove emtional reflection into places where it didn't exist. The bad VA did not help it at all.

I also have Witch Hunter Robin on my laptop, but I can't fake the interest to watch it.

I don't think Lotion Soronnar said they what were more serious than....
probably meant more serious than "most anime" rather any specific work

though Monster is very serious (contemporary thriller)

Plus was..ok. But it did have some hypno-thing going on.
Zero had great animation, but the story ending was awfull. Bird-humna? Wut?

I don't know how anyone could sit through anime's like Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Grave of the Fireflies, or Gun Slinger Girl and say they are kids shows, or pretentious garbage, or tentacle porn, or whatever the f*ck they think. I happen to think the same of prime time TV and most of the dreck that comes out of Hollywood. The mods should just lock this thread instead of letting a bunch of closed-minded douchebags spout their opinions about something they know nothing about.

@ Capt Obvious: congrats on your blatant uninformed bias.

Agreed some of the response in here not too mention the topic its self has been highly flammatory. And just goes to show good ole human ignorance is alive and well...funny how little things have changed.

You're getting upset because someone doesn't care about your preferred medium, and yet everyone else is ignorant? I suppose I'd be more enlightened if I watched cartoons.

Nah, I don't think any amount of education or beatings would help you. You prove that point by calling it cartoons.

Also Opinions are like Ass holes, everyones got one, but that doesn't mean you have to share it.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be allowed to post a 'let's bash Asian art thread', and yet that's what this is. As to you refering to them as cartoons, that's precisely the ignorance I'm talking about.

I'm an anime fan...and they are cartoons
to pretend otherwise is elitism
it's like objecting to Bioware's products being called "games"

of course to dismiss things for being cartoons without considering the indivual quality of the work is also elitism

Actaully they are BOTH animated movies and cartoons.
Cartoons is a term mostly used to refer to kiddie stuff.
Animated movies is geared towards more mature audience.
