I watched all the Gunslinger Girl episodes today, and I've got to say, that was really good. We need more anime like that. I thought it was going to be extremely cute, something I don't care for much, but it wasn't. It was very serious, a good amount of action, and didn't have a whole lot of cliches.

I recommend this show to anyone looking for good anime.

I just can't get into it. Most people go into shock and convulsions when I tell them I wasn't into Pokemon or Dragon Ball Z as a child. My ex gf used to sit me down and make me watch a bunch of diff anime shows with her but I only ended up liking one called Fruits Basket but that was it.

I'm sure anime is composed of a lot of different things but I'm not gonna go on a treasure hunt for them.

I got into anime when I was quite young. Didn't know it was anime back then. Then found out what it was, how much better it was than most american cartoons. So I kept my interest in it. I only watch it now and then these days. I've kinda just stopped caring about it mostly. So I know what you are getting at. Anime has so many different genre's kind of like movies or video games or comics. It just takes finding the right ones to get you interested. You like what you like and that's cool.

Don't get me wrong it's not like I hate anime adaptations it's just most of the time they never live up to the manga for me, and that comes from a lot of things from bad filler(Dragon Ball and One Piece) to making pointless new main characters(Toriko) to the "thing" that they did with Beelzebub(it's too evil for me to say...) and bad art but most of all they lose the heart that made them.

Also for the manga you have read was it online or in hand?

Online. It's practicly impossible to get here.

And for me it's the other way around. I watched the anime first, then read the manga.
So for me it's the manga who doesn't live up to the anime..lol

This is my issue as well. I vastly prefer reading manga to watching anime.

The only anime I know that lives up to and surpasses the manga is Welcome to NHK.
It is probably the funniest anime I've ever seen and I highly recommend it. :wizard:

Clannad is the only anime I've ever watched that has made me cry numerous times. It's sophisticated, believable, and emotionally driven with excellent character development. I watched the english dubbed version so I don't know if watching it in Japanese with subs would change my impression of it - although I doubt it would.

Yeah, you see when it's online the art quality drops anywhere from 20% to 40% even when they say it's high quality...<_<

And yes most people do watch anime first but for me I read first, hell I was reading stuff like Bakuman and Toriko before they ever had an anime.=]

This list is of just manga, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, Lone Wolf and Cub, Vagabond, Vinland Saga, 20th Century Boys, Legend of the Strongest Man Kurosawa(the art will fool you but it is mature), Black Jack, Phoenix(has no ending..), Dante Shinkyoku(Manga adaptation of Dante Alighieri's classic work "The Divine Comedy"), Pluto and it may not look "mature" or come off as it all the time(and when it does it does...) but Hunter x Hunter is a great read and has it's good share of cynicism since I know you love that.

Anyway most of this list may not be on the cynical side or they get past it but still all of them are great reads and for the mature, hope you pick one or all of them.

I've already read Lone Wolf and Cub (loved it) but I'll definitely give the others a look.

Thanks : )

Great to know one of the long lists I made here(all off the top of my head) is put to good use.=]

And I forgot a "the" in the name for Nausicaa(lol) the full name is "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" stupid me.:pinched:

Also feel free to ask questions about any of them if you need info.

Cried on two occasions in Clannad and felt stupid afterwards since fiction usually don't affect me emotionally and it wasn't anything really sad anyway. To prove myself a man I promised myself that I wouldn't cry even once when watching Clannad: After Story. Felt pretty good about myself in the first half but damn, the series gets depressing after that! Cried like a teenage girl in every goddamn episode from around ~16 and on. Just couldn't stop those tears from flowing awkwardly [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/crying.png[/smilie] Oh, and I always prefer subs when I have the option even though it requires more attention when watching.

Yup, was very satisfied with that anime adaption. The only one on par I think of is probably Monster.

Also, just finished reading Hana to Akuma and it was definitely worth the time. Felt a bit drawn out at times, but the ending turned out better than I had thought. Very beautiful yet sad.

Look at this thread you will see a bit of what I have read, the anime adaptaions are more over-the-top(and with bad filler) than the manga always.

Given that I already have read a few, I can definately file this replay of your under BS because I KNOW it's not true.
Blanket statetements like that will get you nowhere.

Yeah you like the moving pictures, voice and color like a baby or kid likes having keys in their face... and again that Lone Wolf and Cub sure has mediocre art!=]

I think you know nothing of manga and art is what I am saying, so go read Bakuman or something.<_<

Excuse me if my desire for qualitsy offends you. Not that I care.
Seriously drop this redicolous routine.

Does it anger you so much that I prefer anime over manga that you fall back to insults?
This alone speaks volumes about you.

Yeah I am sorry about what I said and I mean it(does not help to be up for two full days...). it's just the way you said you like "moving pictures, voice and color over black and white mediocre art" was like someone saying they like Bay's Transformers movies over Citizen Kane because it's louder, has color and has explosions. I am sure that's not what you meant but it's what I saw it as and again sorry if I am wrong. And you are a bit right the anime shows of Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter and Level E are not more over-the-top they are about the same as their manga but that is all I can think of and I read/watch a lot of stuff.

Also nothing on here has ever got me so angry I would fall back to insults, annoyed? sure but never from anger and this is a forum that has people who like to roleplay as Naz!s!=]

So what I am saying let us start over, now how about you tell me what manga you have read?

@eroeru I know very well the Cap has a right to an opinion but we are having a discussion, not a fight. Now I don't think he has a impartial position at all(if that is what you are saying he has) and really the only shonen(that most people know) that would ****** anyone off would be Naruto, Bleach and Fairy Tail and Shonen still is not a genre.

I really am not trying to force my opinion on to anyone but he has been wrong on somethings so far and you will see it more when I reply to the Cap, you are right he should hate shonen, if he feels like it, but he should also know more about it first imo.

And Shonen has a lot of great works to be defensive about(if you know what you are talking about) Hunter x Hunter(this one is better than most Seinen), Level E, Bakuman, FMA, Fist of the North Star, Slam Dunk, Soul Eater, Death Note, Barefoot Gen, GTO, JoJo's Bezarre Adventure, Gintama, D. Gray-man, Black Jack, Franken Fran, Trigun, Saint Seiya, Konjiki no Gash Bell, Toriko, Sket Dance, Rookies, Captain Tsubasa and yes even One Piece and Dragon Ball(if only because people take Dragon Ball too serious) so yeah no crap like Bleach or Fairy Tail will ever make all of the shonen manga I just said be bad, like slimgrin said don't codemn all anime, well don't codemn all Shonen.

And Cap I will get to you soon.;)

You were right about making long threads in this discussion Some Geth...
But seriously; once again, I find amusement in your lack of sensible thread. It still evades me how you all don't see how manga/anime in general is just plain BAD. The lack of skill that both the writers and the artists put into their stories, whether animated film or comic book, is so amusing it saddens me to see that people actually watch/read this. The plots are predictable, filled with holes, and confusing. The art is badly comical, overdone, and, therefore, unrealistic (even in the so-called "mature" or "realistic" anime).

I was in the theater when the preview for "The Secret World of Arrietty" came out. I caught laughter from other members of the audience when the preview for "Mirror, Mirror" came up (another dumb, quirky movie, comparable to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Yet, when the 'Arrietty' preview came up, no one in the theater at any given time laughed during that preview. Even in the so-called "amusing" parts. Oh, and by the way, the movie we went to see was The Adventures of Tintin. You'd think that if 'Arrietty' was aimed at any crowd, it would be the same crowd coming to see 'Tintin'.

 Just sayin'.Image IPB

Omae wa mou shindeiru.

And The Secret World of Arrietty is bassed on The Borrowers.

I am (once again) amused to see that Some Geth's logic is sadly impaired (as well as his spelling. "bassed"? really?) He avoids the entire point of the paragraph I wrote, and, in the process, turns to useless insults ("Omae wa mou shindeiru"). Seriously? He just said in a previous post that he doesn't turn to insults normally.Image IPB

Don't really dislike anime. Ginga Nagareboshi Gin is a huge chunk of my childhood and I still love it. Ginga Densetsu Weed was a nice continuation to that even if the animation was hilariously bad in the first two DVDs. I might be interested in stuff like Wolf's Rain but I've never really bothered...

As for anime fans...those bug me quite a bit, especially on the art scene (altough I guess that should be called manga since it's drawn...whatever). Like for example, let's write a simple word "sorceress" on DeviantArt search engine: http://browse.devian...on=&q=sorceress

It's not that anime style wouldn't look good, it's just that it's freaking everwhere and these artists are basically copying each other. The amount of outright copypasta makes me want to cry sometimes.

http://browse.devian...rder=9&offset=0

Whenever there's some drawing contest on a local newspaper, there are always those 2-5 young girls who draw these copypasta pics and one of them usually takes the first price. It's a bit unfair to judge I guess...it's just so horribly soulless (is that a word?) to draw pieces of art that are based on an already existing formula and style.

It's obvious that if people want to do fan art, it's bound to look like the original. But when it looks exactly the same, without a personal touch, you just have to ask yourself: "Did this person REALLY draw that from scratch?"

I think most people cried while watching Clannad, you'd have to have a real heart of stone not to. The arc with the ghost girl was especially moving.
Also Kotomi was awesome and wonderfully eccentric

If you cried in the first, you'll burst into tears by half of After Story, until the bitter end.

Though personally, I found the first to be more touching... After Story was a bit overdone, imo.

Cannot stress this enough:

Anyway, anime *is* kitch and all that. This doesn't make it bad however - lots of it requires a taste for Asian-type irony and camp...

Though it's mainly "Japanese-type", to be honest. It's a bizarre sense of tongue-in-cheek, and also (self-)irony... Camp (style) humor, with cultural implications...

Kotomi is such a adorable character.  She's genius wrapped up in naivete and inexperience.

Definitely watch After Story. It is just as good as its predecessor although it deals with the characters' tribulations as adults after they've graduated from school.
