Meh I tend to watch films from around the world, better to understand them. Understanding doesn't always have to lead to sympathy or a "Liberalist pacifism" but it gives an insight of the culture, values, ideals, and aspects of a people. Its like how some question "Why does group X hate us" pick up a history book, some lititure, or a relgious text from the region, then it might be obvious. Being stuck in your own corner is only a good idea if you favor 100% isolationism.

It's ethnocentrisim for many...for me it's all relative. One can have pride in one's culture or whatnot and still gain something worthwhile from another's. They'll find any excuse to discredit their target like "it's not realistic enough"

Most of Western Animation aren't designed to look like so real and are so cartoonish, except of few and pixar and dreamworks 3D Animations.

Finding actors to act in a movie was easier than this!

Whatever. I'm really regretful to waste my time watching animes like these at my childhood:

That is actully True, Anime as a medium started out during the US occupation of Japan, when Walt Disney Toons, and Characters like Micky Mouse, and Betty Boop gained popularity, which lead to "US classics" like Astorboy, and Gigantor, whom all came from Japan and many Americans at the time thought where US Shows, the medium then later branched out among many outlets, and even traditional Japanese Art has became the animation. So next time someone ****s about "Big eyes" throw a rock at bugs bunny, he's to be blamed. Thats right Anime is America's fault.

Also as to ethnocentrisim that is far more likely than any other factor that will keep Humanity at each others throats.

Yup Oasmu Tezuka the man who made manga and anime was a big fan of Disney's work.

And yeah back in the day it was hard to tell what a US cartoon was from an anime because well no internet/no kid was going to Japan everyday.;)

Ok, so every rule has its exception. You have presented the exception here.
What was your point ? Please continue.

There are more "exceptions to the rule" than you might know:

Extremely big eyes in here? I think not:

And this? Do you see any big eyes here? Nope:

And bow about this?

And this?

There are many different types of anime. Some anime is made for children. Some anime is for teenagers and some anime is for adults (like the 4 examples above, they're all anime series with an adult audience).

What do you expect? I noticed many (but not all) of the ones who bash anime are the ones who bash anything coming from Japan including video games, cars, etc. They are so adverse to that area of the world that they would rate Superman 64 higher than Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Gotta have bigots in the mix. And don't even mention jrpgs. We had this discussion before lol.

I like how you equate disliking a category of art with bigotry and racism, real classy. You're right in a way I suppose, anime really isn't all that terrible, it's anime fans like you that give it a bad name.

I don't watch animation at all, however it does provide opportunities for realism in the extent that it doesn't need bajillions of dollars to pull off stories, unlike live action would requires far more people and work.

Oh, ok. Few more examples then. And now I'll ask one more time. What is the point ?

No one said "every single anime has big eyes"
Or are you trying to prove that "big eyes" isn't one of the anime's trademarks?

Indeed I'm trying to prove that. Big eyes are only a trademark of a certain type of anime. Just like Disney animations have other trademarks than the cartoons you see on Cartoon Network, to just give one example.

The Disney style is only a small part of all the different kinds of western animations we have.

The "big eye style" is only a small part of all the different kinds of Japanese anime we have.

In Japan, all anime have different labels. You have shonen anime, shojo anime, seinen anime and josei anime.

Shonen = anime for boys
Shojo = anime for girls
Seinen = anime for adult men
Josei = anime for adult women

Only Shonen and Shojo often have those "big eyes" (Shojo more often than Shonen).
Sometimes Josei can have "big eyes" too, but not often.
Seinen almost never has those "big eyes".

Ehh you know what, maybe you are right I am not an expert in this 'field' and I am not going to argue over something so insignificant (for me) as anime is.

All i know - almost every single anime I watched had those "big eyes". Even the one I like - Bible Black - has it and I like it only because of the story (its artstyle is horrible).

Besides I've already gave up on watching animes, I have my opinion about them and nothing is going change it.

lol actually I'm not really a fan of anime. Watched a few good ones and some bad ones. I'm stating my observations about many BSN members who wouldn't touch anything coming out of Japan.  I am a fan of Zelda though. Isn't Japan's Ocarina of Time widely regarded by just about every notable gaming critic as the best video game ever made and is usually at the very top of such lists? Higher than EVERY Bioware title. :police:

That's a shame and not very open minded of you.

By the way, Bible Black sucks in my opinion. It's just a dirty perverted hentia with a mediocre story. I can think of so many animes that have a WAY better story than Bible Black.

Seriously, if a hentai is the best anime you've ever seen, then you clearly have a bad and incomplete picture of anime!

If you want anime with an actual good story, that isn't hentai, try:

Cowboy Bebop
Death Note
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Ghost in The Shell
Elven Lied

Most good Seinen(manga) is good for the minds of fools, it helps them be less like fools and helps them think about things like "life" and "politics" and sometims show them the real "evil" that people can do.

But you have never read any of it, a pity.

Oh and xkg it was not about the 'big eyes' thing it was more about how Tezuka works put fools who say "all anime sucks" to sleep, like the badass that he was.B)

Unrealistic looking face right there.

Then show me an animated feature with a realistic face.

I was being sarcastic actually. I probably should have used one of the various smiley faces or something.

After reading through the new posts of this thread, I think I've formed another opinion, in that I only dislike Shonen Jump or "kiddy anime". My knowledge of anime isn't that great, but I know that I've only ever seen anime that have those DBZ-styled fights or are based off of Shonen Jump manga(or both).

Or any anime that even remotely resembles this.

Hunter x Hunter, Death Note, Fist of the North Star, Bakuman, One Piece, Toriko, Saint Seiya, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, YuYu Hakusho and Level E are all from Shonen Jump and they are all great(more so the manga of them) and most of them are not kiddy.

Oh and one has to keep in mind most of the west takes Dragon Ball far too serious, since they saw a bad edited dub of a gag show with some cool over the top fights that was never about being serious(save for the Cell arc and that arc sucks).;)

I second Death Note, and most possibly Hunter x Hunter.

Though you would really need to get through some cultural threshold, after some 10 episodes the classier type of shonen will 100% certainly not fail to amaze. Or at the very least it'll be a positive surprise in ways...

(the other series here are more hit and miss imho, but I've yet to see any avid hater of Death Note who's actually given the series a go)...

I think Death Note started off good but about halfway it started to fall apart. So yes, you could say I don't like Death Note.

You just gotta pretend that it ends halfway.  The first time through I watched every episodes, second time I pretended the second part didn't exsist.
