If it can pick Shepard up I hope it's a one hit kill you can't escape from.

I also hope the driver flips Shepard the bird before finishing him off.. Because you would, wouldn't you?

That's the case currently... basically if you're sticking around for the full length of the melee chain (that's one big swing and a follow up ground smash) the third action is him picking you up and killing you... with a really nice animated camera.

It's a bit of an experiment... so far it hasn't been too frustrating... and it makes the Atlas feel pretty threatening.

Stefano, the animator that did all the actions for the Atlas was joking about having the sync move pull Shepard up to the cockpit so he could make rude gestures...

We had also joked about changing the move so the Atlas would lift Shepard up to the cockpit, then the cockpit would open and the driver would punch Shepard in the face...

So much win in this post.

After teasing us with this, you guys must implement something like this, seeing the pilot sneer at shepard would have me raging initially but having shepard flip him off after pulling him out and stomping him with his own atlas would be priceless.

Well, there's currently a pretty fun (and challenging) maneuver you can do... which is to charge the Atlas, bait the first melee swing and evade out of the way while shooting... then charge back in, evade the followup ground slam, fire another shot and charge back in. It's pretty hard to do... but extremely satisfying.

I've done something similar to Pyros, so it might work.

I'mma try it! ^_^

Or have shep stomp on him in the mech and then a giant mech sized DX style crotch chop lol

I support this.  Would be hilarious...   Though I got to say all around. if you guys have that complicated of a maneuver to vanguard fight these guys I'm sure we'd love to see it if you can convince them to show a clip of fighting the Atlas up close.

I have a question for you, Brenon: Would a single, well-placed round to the head from a decently upgraded Widow be enough to take out an unshielded Atlas?

How much damage do the two first melee actions do exactly?

How awesome would it be if that played out like the final battle in Avatar?  Liara would need a bow and arrows, but she could save the day and kill the Atlas pilot/Colonel Quaritch.  It would be epic.

Possibly doesnt matter because I can see the third attack being the "ace in the hole" to insta kill you ifyou happened to dodge the first two attacks but not the third

Meaning that the first two attacks are friendly "love taps" to gently remind you that you are standing too close and the third being the "Ok....I warned you..." *Squiiiiish"

That is a possibility on how it works. Althrough I would still like a comment explaining it in-depth.

Leave it to us, Brennan. Give us a couple months and I'm sure come summer next year we'll have found a way to melee Atlases to death or some other exploit(s) to ruin all your work making this game hard. Image IPB

That's usually what happens a month tops after I get my hands on a game lol.  Even Ninja Gaiden II on master only provided a "minimal" amount of challenge after the first time through Image IPB

That was just a conservative estimate taking into account how long it'll take for the game to reach the majority of us and for everyone to learn the trick Image IPB

Once you've punched through the canopy, you can snipe the driver with one shot - yep... but depending on how much of the canopy you've destroyed it can be an easy shot, or a very hard shot.

We still need to do some balancing on the canopy, since the damage system interacts with it in a kind of wonky way - but that's mostly just balancing. The idea is that it should feel pretty satisfying to get those skill shots (if you want to risk making them).

This Stefano needs more creative freedom, if you ask me.

Also: sounds cool. Seems like it would be difficult to accidentally let a 15 foot tall mech finish a combo on you, I'm glad the player's properly punished for it.

In the final game it'll probably vary a bit... but right now the first one puts you in bleedout, the second one takes you down to... well, very close to death. They're pretty big melee hits... so it's not really something you want to get hit with.

Sounds neat. Will the combat areas be designed to allow Shepard (AND SQUADMATES) to outmanuver and stay mobile against the Atlas? Just to avoid these nasty hits.

Yup, not nearly as annoying as those striders from Half-Life 2, I'd say.
