Three Types of Party Members

Garrus and Liara are confirmed to be optional party members who'll follow you around for the entire game. Still, that leaves a second sentinel (for those who killed Kaiden) and a vanguard. Given that Wrex is confirmed to be a temp and devs have said that Jacob won't be back as a permanent squadmate, I'm guessing that we'll have Jack back. Also, that's way too much estrogen. So let's see who's recruitable after looking at who our temps are.
Based on hints gathered, it's reasonable to assume that these characters are temporary squadmates.
Grunt
Wrex
Jacob
Anderson
Zaeed
Thane
Mordin
Aria
So let's look at our options for potential optional squadmates. I'm guessing that we'll have slots since Garrus and Tali may be dead, creating a need for new characters although we know that we'll be able to recruit fewer than twelve of them for the Normandy.
Legion - You're going to choose between the Geth and Quarians. I don't think that Tali will let you choose the former without a fight so I'm going to assume that if you ally with the Geth, Legion will return since he has the same abilities as Tali anyway.
Batarian - We've never had one in our party and their world was attacked before Earth. I'm expecting some sort of strange alliance between two former enemies.
Mercenary - Confirmed as a character but the role isn't certain. Is confirmed to be female and we need more amles so it's good to speculate a bit more.
Prothy - Leaked as a party member thanks to a marketing blunder. Is probably male since we already have too many females confirmed. (Ash, Liara and Tali to offset Vega and Garrus? Kind of awkward, as is only five party members.)
Maeko Matsuo- Rumored that we'll be revising ME1 locations and I'd love to see her back. I cn a't back this up with any logic other than wishful thinking.
Krogan - A given that we'll have one
Kolyat - His father is going to die in this game. that much is given. Plus he's an axious young guy with a desire to prove himself in battle and live up to his father's legacy. He'd be a great addition to the team although some would just see him as a whiner version of Grunt.
Raloi - Hinted on the Cerberus News Net. I think that we'll probably get one.
As far as Kaumi or Samara. I think that Kasumi will be a temp and Samara will be an enemy thanks to you killing 300,000 civilians.

No one is permanent.
That doesn't mean everyone's a temp. that just means that anyone can die due to your decisions.

The Geth didn't want to start a war with the Quarians, they only fought for their own survival.
And I seem to remember seeing something about the Geth not wanting to keep the Quarian homeworld anyway -- their ultimate goal is to build a Dyson sphere around a star.

I don't see why a persuasive Shepard couldn't work out an agreement between the Quarians and the Geth.

If you choose that you'll probably keep Tali with you.

How is that possible, that it only takes first name, second name and 2 lines of dialogue to make a character a squadmate opportunity for someone? thats a riddle for me.
I'm afraid, that it's possible that no squadmates except for Liara and VS will be permament option. In ME 2 you had 12 characters and it was possible to do every mission with a different squad. I think, that in ME3 you'll get 1 temp for each mission (for example Mordin for the Salarian homeworld mission) and you'll choose the second one from your not-so-numerous squad.

That's not what the original coverage of the game said. They mentioned three type of party members but you'll be able to recruit fewer than 12 of them.

Also, who you recruit determines what endings are available.

@vdeity: No the geth doesn't want to build a dyson sphere, they want to build a similiar superstructure that can house all geth in one single collective.
Right...? Either a solid shell or a network of satellites built around a star to harness nearly all the energy it puts out -- to which every geth program is uploaded to.
What do you want to call that, if not a Dyson sphere?
