Having the companions "look cool" doesn't help if we don't all agree what "cool" is.  And we clearly don't.  Adventuring in bare feet is very silly.

Tell that to the barefoot running crowd.

The problem with this sort of complaint is that there's no logical limits to it.  Don't like the companion clothes?  Whine and complain that you're entitled to some sort of DLC that "fixes" the issue.  Don't like the companion personalities?  Whine and complain that you're entitled to some sort of DLC that "fixes" the issue.  Don't like the combat?  Whine and complain that you're entitled to some sort of DLC that "fixes" the issue.

What happened to people taking responsibility for their own fun and enjoyment?  What happened to trying things that maybe don't appeal to you from the get go?  What happened to just ignoring the little stuff and concentrating on the main themes?

If you want to say, hey, some variety would be nice, I'd pay for it, FINE.  BRAVO.  I salute you.  But if your focus is "I can't BELIEVE you did something I DON'T LIKE OMG I'm YOUR BEST CUSTOMER EVER I DESERVE A PERFECT TAILOR-MADE EXPERIENCE" you're just going to annoy people.

The truth is that tailoring costs money.  And time.  Neither of which exist in unlimited supply.  So ask yourself this: what would you be willing to trade for those companion outfits?  You said you'd buy DLC.  That's what, $10?  But that's not what it'll actually cost you.  The actual cost is things like: less time to work on story DLC.  Less money to work on DA3.  Developers getting fed up with make-work BS projects and moving on to other things.  Are you willing to shell THAT out?

Or can you recognize that this is, in fact, an incredibly minor "problem" and get yourself some perspective? <_<

Just as we first meet Leliana wearing chantry robes, but once she's adventuring those are no longer appropriate.

The real reason the good guys lost in Darkspawn Chronicles.  ;)

I like companions having a unique appearance.

I feel it helps them stand out, helps portray their character and makes them more than just another person.

I would prefer that they have a few more outfits to choose from, but overall I liked their unique look to the DAO system.

One of the best mods i used in DAO was Lelianas Sacred ashes outfit. Why? because imo it suited her, it was her and should have been her main outfit ingame.

It was like Morrigans outfit. It suited her and helped make her stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Unique outfits are great.

Change companion armor all you want, so long as they don't end up looking like clones of each other. What I have a problem with is someone demanding the right to changing something fundamental to a character like Jack's tattoos, which I honestly believe are an important part of who she is as a person.

And why should that be wrong? If someone likes that all party member have the same look than let it be. Its his/her own decision.
Plus, the only ones who have this restriction are console player like me. While PC Player have their mods to customize the appearance, the console player has to deal with the restriction.

Considering this is a "role playing" game, do you take the same approach with your friends in real life, chasing them around trying to dress them in something you approve of?

I see this gets brought up a lot. I don't know anyone who goes around fighting DS, HD's and gang after gang in real life.

I would compare it more to being in the armed forces than telling a friend what to wear. If a member of the unit decides to wear a pink tutu in a sortie not only will they get themselves killed but the other team members as well.

If people really go around fighting gangs with friends then maybe they would tell them to wear a Kevlar vest and invest in a gun and put away the dagger since the other gang members all have guns. Or I guess we could say heh your iconic leather jacket and bowie knife will scare them to death. I don't think so but whatever.

Real life vs. fantasy arguments never fair well.

If Legacy is an example of "story DLC", yes, I would happily give that up.  Frankly, no new story content is going to be enjoyable without the core game playing in a way that is fun.

I only noticed Fenris's outfit when I started playing Legacy, because I'm using a mod that lets me dress him however I like, but the mod doesn't seem to work in Legacy, so suddenly Fenris is a poncy git in anachronistic leggings, and I don't like it.

I think DA2's armour designs are more creative that DAO's armour designs.  I enjoy equipping them (overall, I prefer DAO's art direction, but there wasn't a ton of variety in terms of armour appearance).  Being limited to equipping Hawke (who is both a single class and a single gender) wastes a lot of that terrific design.

That's a poor analogy.  In real life, I'm a person, and any friend I have is a person.  We're roughly equal entities.

This is the same as the relationship between Hawke and Fenris.

But that's irrelevant.  I, the player, am not Hawke.  I'm not saying that Hawke should be allowed to tell Fenris what to wear.  I'm saying that I, the player, should be allowed to decide what Fenris wants to wear.

In-game, it would still be Fenris making the decision, but he'd be making the decision I want him to make.

Where does this attitude end? You decide what Fenris wants to wear. Can you decide Fenris likes mages? Can you decide that Fenris wants to go back to Tevinter? Can you decide that your character isn't named Hawke, but Bobbie Jo Flamerider?

It seems like what you want is actually an RPG-setting sandbox, which Dragon Age is decidedly not.

I'm wary of answering for Sylvius, but I think the answer to all those questions is yes. Though I'm horrified to think that he could ever actually name a character Bobbie Jo Flamerider.

It is that same as people saying that Isabella should be able to use a bow... That's just not Isabella. She is a duelist, I don't think she ever had ranged weapon training.

I'm not sure how relevant this argument would be if we could just get DA2-style unique outfits that progress on their own (improving on level up at least, if not upgrade-able as well, and visually changing when appropriate) but could be swapped out like Morrigan's unique outfit. The devs have talked a big game about finding an inclusive happy medium... this is one such medium.

I agree  a bow would not be in her training - most of her fighting  would be done in boarding other ships which is  about close-quaters combat and combat can get.

Certain characters not being able to used ranged weapons in DAII drove me slightly nuts. (I quite often had Aveline standing around doing nothing.)

I think it's cool that Varric loves Bianca and all, but I'd much prefer to be able to equip him with anything I wanted. (Because weapon choice is more important than whether he and Bianca have a history. But just my opinion.)

you  know  Final Fantasy 13 did that with weapons in the game - each character a unique weaupon and  there where differents weapons of that  varity that you could  make  or find for that character but you couldn't just have  Lightning running around with  Fang's statff

My bad; I thought it was a CGI render.

Here's another shot of the Leliana costume from a different cosplayer. It's probably the best quality costume I could find via google on a bunch of cosplay sites.

It's entirely based on her Sacred Ashes look, which is tied to her concept art:

Click for full image of cosplayer in Leliana costume (link is SFW, site is not). She did a fantastic job with her costume, but recognition of the character is limited to those familiar with the concept art, or the sacred ashes trailer. Note that even DAO fans in this thread weren't able to recognize her outfit.

But that armour didn't appear in Origins. If it'd be a starting item like Morrigan's robes, a cosplayer wearing it would make the character much more easily recognizeable.

Games like the Witcher, Mass Effect ( 1 ), and the KotOR series all have player characters/party members with unique features that are also fully customizable. It's just that Origins was lacking in interesting outfits or weapons in general.

For instance, I could easily recognize characters like Carth Onasi, Bastila Shan, The Handmaiden*, Atton Rand, etc. by their default outfits, even though they're fully customizable.

The Handmaiden isn't technically a unique model since her 'sisters' were all made to look alike, but that was a plot-significant design choice, actually.

I actually quite liked that aspect of FF13.
I prefer story over gameplay - so I have a pirate on my team who is suppossed to be a dualist I prefer her to be a dualist.
As for the armor. It is the same. Hawke's team is not an army, but a group of friends. It just seems weird if Hawke can dictate their clothing.

That's the thing. Story is driving almost everything in DAII, even down to armour and weapons.

And it was still a great game, but it's (actually) way more story driven than I'd ever imagined DA would go. I do like the Bianca bits. They're cute. But being able to equip a weapon is something I took for granted in these kinds of games. (Being BG, Icewind Dale, etc party based RPGs.)

Sylvius, you're nit-picking again.  Once you are making Fenris' decisions for him, you will not be happy because a decision is not available for you to choose.  Then you're not going to be happy with his VA, or how his lines are delivered.  Then you're not going to be happy that you can't make Fenris the main character instead of Hawke. Then you're not going to be happy that the game is in Kirkwall instead of Ferelden, et cetera.

I think that you are cheating yourself out of a lot of enjoyment because video games simply cannot live up to your standard of customization.  You keep asking devs to compromise with your ideas in making games, but I'm not seeing you willing to compromise how you play them.

True. And Bianca was quite a formidable weapon. (But the lack of bows on warriors was a real pain.)

The thing is, it's not Hawke doing that. It's the player. The difference is important, yet lost to many.
Again: Nothing is preventing you from leaving Isabela the way she is. Enabling changes is not the same as forcing them.
