When I initially start a new game everything works fine, but when I try to load a saved game, Carver's face is all black and my character is invisible except for his staff. It has happend on both characters I have tried to make.

There is a thread pinned to the top of this forum here with posting guidelines. That information is critical if anyone is going to ba able to help you. You simply haven't provided enough information for anyone to make a reasonable guess. It could be mods. It could be graphics card or drivers. It could be corrupted game files. It could be a whole host of other things.
