No problem. You might wanna give Renegade Shepard a try yourself once. It's really fun to see the other side of the coin by yourself.

I'm a Paragon player at heart, but I really enjoyed playing my Renegade Shepard too.

I have tried twice now....just can't make it through the games.......am too soft....:(...LOL...:D

You can play a renegade playrhtough and still be a nice guy if you pick the paragon options for mundane conversations. Just make sure that the major choices are Renegade. That's what I did anyway. As my rene-shep, I was nice and friendly to my crew and helpless people, but a jerk and ruthless bastard towards everyone else.

Note how I said "if you want to." There's no indicator that you'll succeed. However... if all Renegades care about is results, should results not be all you get?

Playing as a Shepard who shoots herself repeatedly in the foot and ends up looking like a fool is not exactly the kind of results I'm aiming for.

Because of this topic, I just came up with a new type of Shepard that I'm going to give a try in a next playthrough!

I introduce:

Materialist Shepard!

Materialist Shepard will try to SAVE, KEEP, PRESERVE and FIX as much as possible.

That's right, I'm going to play a Shepard that tries to preserve as much as possible. Preserving stuff is going to be my main focus! So my major choices for my Materialist Shepard will be:

- rachni saved
- colonists saved
- wrex alive
- council saved
- genophage data kept
- heretics rewritten
- continued project Overlord with David
- collector base kept

(did I miss anything?)

That is true....I fried myself when he threatened Emily Wong....hated him from that point on...and being an *ss to Gianna finished it for me...Second attempt was with a femShep....she didn't have my custom manSheps canon face so it wasn't so difficult, but I lost interest before getting her all the way through...Will give your suggestion a go...thanks Luc0s....:)

Paragon is just too boring to play as. I did a Paragon playthrough of ME1/2 and it felt like I was playing with cheat codes, just no sense of accomplishment or that I made any hard decisions.

Half-assed, pointless and troll Renegon is where it's at for me.

Basically because the Pro-Anyone i.e. "I'm better than you" or "I'm right and you're wrong" viewpoint is the reason for the vast majority of every conflict in the history of humanity. In short, ideology is mankind's deadliest invention.

You're welcome.

I was neutral towards Emily Wong with my Rene-Shep. I was also neutral with Giana Parasini. With Parasini it was actually rather cool to be renegade with a bit of neutral, because I first said to Parasini that I would convince Lorik Qeen, then I went to Lorik Qeen and used intimidate on him to convince him.
Trust me, intimidating him is much more satisfying that that "you'd be a hero" bullcrap. Heck, you don't even really intimidate him, you just show him clearly that you hold all the cards and he doesn't. Lorik responds with: "It's good to see we have all our cards on the table, to bad that you have a better hand than I have. Alright, I will testify."

Neutral is a perfectly valid option if you want to play renegade but don't want to be an a-hole all the time. And trust me, some neutral options are surprisingly fun. It's true that neutral options often don't give you any paragon or renegade points, but it's still interesting to see how neutral dialogue plays out.

So yeah, give it a try: Be a renegade, but be neutral in specific situations when you don't want to be a jerk.

As opposed to letting the council die in which you end up pissing off every other species in the process in what is perceived as a grab for power even if that is not the reason why your Shepard did it that is how it is perceived.

Also, the difference is:

Those human lives were risking their lives and they knew it.  Plus, being military, it was their obligation to follow orders.

The council dying on the other hand, they had no say in it.

Simple. The writer decided to make it that way. They think promoting interspecies harmony and cooperation is paragon. I'd say pro-human should be neutral because that is not inherently bad while professing hate and actual discrimination against all aliens would be renegade which they have slanted towards being evil despite claiming otherwise.

I can't bring myself to be a renegade Shepard either...I usually give up on Noveria (rachni) or Feros (Shiala) ^_^

There is certain renegade actions I simply can't do,like letting the salarian die in Thanes RM,but I can easily punch the other one i the face.

Fun fact: absolutely nothing that gives Renegade points is necessary. So, in a way, it's Paragons who care about the best results, while Renegades are enslaved by principle by claiming that "it SHOULDN'T be this way!"

Renegades don't meta-game.

In any case I don't see why Paragon and Renegade need to be tied to politics. Why can't Shepard be onboard with the Council but utterly ruthless in completing missions?

Why can't a Paragon be suspicious of the Council, firmly a human independent, but also someone who refuses to let innocents be sacrificed for the sake of mission success?

Uh huh. And if Sovereign opens the relay and the Reapers pour through this "political move" will benefit you how exactly?

You're planning for an endgame but if you don't stop Sovereign THERE WILL NOT BE AN END GAME!

Yes they do. You just used a Paragon argument to justify your choices.

Actually, that was me mocking the excessively obnoxious Renegade partisans. I can give you in-game decisions for every Paragon thing I've done if you prefer.

You could, and I could then point out how almost all of them are based on flawed reasoning and misplaced priorities.

It will be amusing if we ever finally see a Paragon choice backfire and then watch and see how many Paragons stand by their decision.

So, flawed reasoning and misplaced priorities consistently lead to total success?

Vigil says something to the fact that part of the Reaper's plan include the destruction of centralized governments; then divide and conquer.

It is unknown to Shepard whether he'll succeed or not (Unless you're Meta gaming) in defeating Nazara , saving the council hedges your bet against the Reaper in the long run.

Trusting the other races is a risk. They could decide to look after themselves first and leave humanity swinging in the breeze. Paragon would weaken humanity in the hopes that the galactic community would reciprocate. However, the council has repeatedly shown that they put their own interests first. Renegade seeks to save humanity's strength and even build upon it, even if that means weakening the other races. They would do the same.

Here are your choices: the centralized government takes a hit or the Reapers pour through the relay, capturing the Citadel and deactivating the mass relay network

Which do you want?

Saving the Council may indeed help in the long run (I stress, "may"), but my point is, and I was explicit and plain about this so I don't know how you could be confused, is that THERE WILL BE NO LONG RUN IF SOVEREIGN WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me repeat that again incase you STILL don't get it.

IF SOVEREIGN WINS THERE WILL NOT BE A LONG RUN! IT'S OVER! YOU LOSE! REAPERS WIN! NO ME2, NO ME3!!!!!!!

DO YOU GET IT NOW?????

Apparently you missed the meaning of Saphra's post. If Shepard doesn't know whether attacking Sovereign directly will succeed, why would he divert forces from the effort by entangling them with the geth and Destiny Ascension, thus multiplying the uncertainty as result of having less firepower to bear on Sovereign?

Stopping Sovereign trumps anything else. The survival of the Council, the potential for human casualties, etc. etc. Because none of those things will matter in the slightest if Sovereign manages to open the relay. Which is why my Shepards always, without variation, choose "focus on Sovereign" option.
