You should have bought NV instead, much better Fallout RPG than 3.
Should have boufht FO1 and 2 instead.
I agree, but I'd presume he's looking for a game that plays almost exactly like Oblivion or Skyrim, so F3 and F:NV are his best options.
Minus the fact some people don't like top down CRPG's *gasp*

check the maps on the pip boy for quest destinations
in the early stages you are weak...running away is a good idea ..radiation poison from swimming through a lake may be better than fighting a supermutant or mirelurk (until your weapons and skills are up to the job)

You should throw it in the dumpster and get Fallout: New Vegas which is coming out as good as the originals especially with the DLC. Other than that piece of advise, there really isn't anyway that you should approach Fallout: 3 since it is too easy. You cannot fail in that game.
FNV is definitely more true to the original series, but I've never played a game with a more crushing, depressing atmosphere than that of the Capital Wasteland. It's an amazing and unique experience. Everywhere you go, you're witnessing the end of civilization in varying degrees. From the burnt out metropolis to out on the fringe where nature is beginning to reclaim the ruins. Nothing else comes close.
I'm sure that turns off a lot of people though.

Where's my Vault Cit, Modoc, The Glow, Necropolis (Underworld is not so great and tiny) I feel more work went into the Fallout 1 and 2 locales to leave it feeling more impressive.

Sofar, I'm about 3 1/2 hours in, almost level three. My main skills are barter, energy weapons and small weapons.
Still getting a feel for the world and haven't really gone deep exoloring yet. Early on I'm seeing that caps are hard to come by, which is a good thing. I poked around for a little then went to Megaton for some side quests and getting a feel for towns in general there.
Some questions to give me some pointers, since I only have 3 months to play this game...
1. Where are these fabled super mutants?
2. Any factions?
3. Are there subterranean areas to explore?
4. Does loot level with you?
These are some initial questions. I have some decent weapons no so I'm about to head out into the Wasteland and dig right into it exploring. Gotta get my inventory cleaned up. Which leads me to a question I forgot.
5. Houses. Any suggestions?

I have noticed it is a tad easy. A little clunky as well in movememt, but nothing too bad.

Sigh; I guess "play New Vegas instead" has now become FO3's equivalent of the interminable "Oblivion vs. Morrowind" silliness. They're virtually identical games overall, with FO3 getting a slight edge as far as my personal preference goes, but also losing some points for having a more crash-prone engine. But both are great games.SOLID_EVEREST wrote...

Yeah. And it's one of those things people tend to really appreciate, or really hate. Ideally, a good sandbox game will reward a player's curiosity and ingenuity, while still presenting a coherent enough setting for some story to unfold for those who care about. The best part about Fallout 3 and FNV imo is ingoring the main stories and simply exploring the wasteland. But then, I've always been fascinated with post-apocalypse scenarios since I was much younger and watched the Mad Max series for the first time, then later got into the fiction. I don't need a reason to get into the game; simply playing it and exploring is its own huge reward since I can't have gunfights with raiders and supermutants in a radioactive wasteland in real life. Well, at least not unless I move to some nasty place like Somalia.Beerfish wrote...

There really isn't any silliness to the comparison. The crappy dialogue/voice acting, terrible quests, and even worse main story all speak for themselves when you compare Fallout: 3 to New Vegas. Plus, you can't even compare the DLCs because New Vegas has some of the best I've ever seen.
Anyways, if you had to pick but one Fallout game (Black Isle), I would say go straight for Fallout: 2. Fallout: 1 was a good game, but the companion interaction was almost zero, and the world just wasn't as good; although, the storyline was better than 2's.

Those things are rather subjective, though: I preferred the voice acting in FO3 and thought the quests were for the most part more interesting, though the MQ was rather patchy. FO3 has the edge for me because there was more attention to detail and it made exploration worthwhile, whereas exploring NV was usually rewarded by hitting a collision box. I'm not sure why the DLCs can't be compared: sure, Operation Anchorage and Broken Steel were uninspired, but The Pitt was as good as the NV DLCs and Point Lookout better: again, in my opinion.SOLID_EVEREST wrote...

Technically, New Vegas' engine had some performance and reliability improvements that made a big difference, but it was also riddled with quest bugs that frequently became a major nuisance.
If I had to nominate one to have never existed I wouldn't really want to choose: ultimately I loved playing both (other than the bugs) and felt that overall they're so similar that it makes little sense to me to put one on a pedestal at the same time as saying the other is rubbish.

I just got Fallout 3 to lead me up to Skyrim. This is my first Fallout game. Any hints and tips on how to play?
Best tip: Dont take any notice of people telling you to not bother. Morrowind over Oblivion, ME2 over ME1, FO3 over FONV... its prevalent everywhere. Its a wonderful, huge game. It deserves your time.
I say play on easier modes first and just enjoy the story, gather up crap loads of cash and play around. Dont just go from location to location, really explore.
I always prefer getting medicine, speech, science, repair up early to properly enjoy the game and the choices offered.

The Super Mutants are around but not in the first area. You'll come across them on the way to Rivet City, most likely.
There are no factions, really. You can choose sides every so often but you're mostly a loner.
Try looking for vaults or underground caves, etc. The vaults are pretty creepy, actually.
I'm not sure if the loot levels with you, I didn't pay attention. You do get perks that allow you to find more cash and ammo, though.
In Megaton, talk to the sheriff and tell him you'll disarm the bomb. Have your explosives skill on level 25, though. Then disarm the bomb and he'll give you the keys to a house that you can customise a little in the shop. Or you can talk to the guy in the bar and offer to blow the bomb. That way you get a place in the tower.
