The best advice is, not to take any at all. Experience the game for yourself, on your first playthrough. Get out of this forum, and into the game. It has a lot to offer, despite the neg feedback from other people.

If you are experiencing problems, or having trouble. Sign in to the forums.bethsoft.com/index.php. You will get sound advice, without a lot of BS.

Ok, so here's the rundown.

Sofar, I'm about 3 1/2 hours in, almost level three. My main skills are barter, energy weapons and small weapons.

Still getting a feel for the world and haven't really gone deep exoloring yet. Early on I'm seeing that caps are hard to come by, which is a good thing. I poked around for a little then went to Megaton for some side quests and getting a feel for towns in general there.

Some questions to give me some pointers, since I only have 3 months to play this game...

1. Where are these fabled super mutants?
2. Any factions?
3. Are there subterranean areas to explore?
4. Does loot level with you?

These are some initial questions. I have some decent weapons no so I'm about to head out into the Wasteland and dig right into it exploring. Gotta get my inventory cleaned up. Which leads me to a question I forgot.

5. Houses. Any suggestions?

1 -some enemies have fixed locations, others are random encounters depending on your level.
keep exploring you'll find them, keep levelling up -they will find you - after 3 1/2 hours you should not be ready to take on one so be thankful you haven't encountered any
2- there are some groups that you can befriend and help and other groups who will try to kill you on sight (and at least one group you can befriend and help only to have them turn on you and shoot you  on sight for no aparant reason). For the story you will be working with the Brotherhood of Steel and fighting the Enclave.
3 - some caves some vaults and an old (no longer in use) subway system (watch out for traps)
4 I think so but could be wrong - some is definitely fixed
5 - 2 possibles (in Megaton and Tenpenny tower) You can only get the TenPenny Tower one if Megaton no longer exists (Note this can limit your ability to interact with the people of Megaton so I suggest go for the Megaton one unless you really like big explosions:devil:)

There are LOTS of Super mutants in the Mall area of DC. You will get there eventually, especially if you plan on doing the Galaxy News Radio quest. But it's also extremely tough to get it as you have to go through Metros to access it, but once you find it you can fast travel to any of the places within the Mall (Museum of Tech, Museum of History, National Archives, just to name a few)

The Megaton house is easy as hell to get. Just disarm the nuke in the center of town and you get an instant house... or if you're evil, blow it up and you'll get one in Tenpenny Tower.

The only place I suggest you NOT go to until you're a high level is Old Olney. It's a death trap and if you come across it on accident, you will know why.

How does computer hacking work?

I open a computer terminal and I'm sure there is some good loot in it. I know some need a certain skill, but even if I do get into one, I have no idea what I'm doing. Any help? :P

No loot is gained, it's normally for minor information.

And the hacking itself is made out of wild guesses.

It's not at all, though you can take that approach and just reload a quicksave if you melt the computer.

You'll see a mix of words and random characters. When you click a word, it will say something like "2 correct" or whatever, which means two of the letters in the word are the correct letters in the correct place, for the correct password. Kind of like playing a spin-off of Hangman. So pick a word, see how many letters you got right, then look for other words that share that number of letters. Oh and if you mouse-over the random characters, sometimes a string of them will be highlighted. If you click that string of characters, it will either remove a dud or restore your allowed attempts.

I am making this sound more confusing than it actually is, I'm sure. But there is a method to the madness, and you can get the correct answers without randomly guessing, without breaking a terminal, and without reloading a quicksave.

Hacking is still a pain in the butt. And getting a good system down took time.

Tips:

Always go for things with common suffixes or prefixes first, i.e. -ing

Have all but your last guess be as different as possible.

with that, I can get 90%+ of hacking attempts without save/load nonsense.

You can reprogram turret targetting, so that they shoot at everything (including each other), while you remain hidden - kinda of handy if you come across really powerful enemies like Reavers.

You can also open locks/safes.

Yep, it is kind of a pain in the butt.

Another tip: wait until you're down to your last attempt before picking random character strings. If you hit the attempt restore, it will restore you to maximum even if you've only clicked one word. So save that for maximum effect.

I use a similar strategy.

Then, for example, if the computer tells you that you get 0, 1 or 2 matches, you can automatically rule out any other words ending with "ing".

In fact, I find that getting 0 matches is sometimes the most helpful clue, since you can the rule out most of the words in the list.

Also, increasing you science skill reduces the number of words that appear making it easier to pick the correct one.

I'm level 6 now and I'm really starting to get into the world and exploring....checking things out, unlocking the map and what not. Also starting to locate some bigger weapons that I found are much to my liking. Thinking of just doing this for a while until level 10 or so before heading into D.C..

Where are these fabled bobble-heads? I scrounge but I haven't come across any. Found the one on dads desk though...thanks for the tip. Also, when does creating weapons at weapon benches become more prominent?

Bobbleheads are well hidden. You just have to explore everything, including trying to get into locked houses.

Creating custom weapons is never strictly necessary. It's more of a flavor thing. Keep an eye out for schematics. I use nuka grenades (so much fun) and the dart gun (though OP).

Ignore the main story. Explore the wasteland. Profit.

This. Unless you want to finish the game in a few hours...seriously, these games aren't about the story.

And +1 on using a sledgehammer. Sniping can be fun too, but I personally cba with ammo.

I <3 Energy Weapons. Ammo is easy.

Guns are common but ammo is a pain in the butt. Oh look, you don't have the right type of power/primer cases.

Melee weapons can be potent-if you are not out in the open. Like with those darn Legion Assassins.

Also, get friendly with the Brotherhood of Steel and get that Power Armor. Don't underestimate Damage Threshold!

People have trouble finding ammo?? I never have ammo problems, except .44.  Though melee is hella fun.  I like the special sledgehammer you get at the Anchorage War Memorial.

Even when you get a good system worked out, some of the answers can still be frustratingly elusive.  The number of times wild guesses would've been quicker than trying to figure it out properly... though it certainly isn't just guesswork, it would seem that a certain amount of good fortune is necessary (or that bad enough luck is a hindrance; whatevs, etc).

Seems the unofficial New Vegas patch (or one of the mods I'm using, at least) reconfigures the terminal hacking so it only displays one word, i.e. the correct answer.  One could argue that it kills the challenge, but I think I've now done my time with terminal hacking and I don't miss it!

Not later in the game but in the beginning it can be a drag...also at least in New Vegas I seem to remember having to stock up with ammo nearly every time I went into a new place. Working as intended but I'm so horribly lazy D:

New Vegas I would go through though surplus bins like nothing.

I was also continuously hunting for materials to make Weapon Repair kids, as they were 100x cheaper than having someone fixing the weapon.

This :/

The fact that breaking Death Claw noses caused my power fist to deteriorate rather quickly didn't help...

Tag Repair, one of Lockpick/Science and Small Guns. Build your small guns skill at first even if you want to use energy weapons, as energy weapons are heavily limited until a bit later in the game.  For perk choices, I recommend anything that boosts critical chance and damage. (Finesse and Better Criticals I think). I recommend you don't 'pick a morality'. Rather, actually role play a character and make decisions based on that characters background.

Don't blow your alien blaster ammo, and also don't keep saving it thinking, I'll use it when I meet a real challenge. Then you end up finishing the game having fired about 5 shots. (You'll know what I mean when you get it).

If you don't have the GOTY edition, get The Pitt, Broken Steel and Point Lookout dlcs. They put any dlc Bioware have recently put out to shame. The other two are alright.

The final and most important tip: explore. Explore every location you find, and look around carefully; these aren't the basic caves in DA:2, most of them have their own stories to uncover.

I did have to be more careful of ammo in FNV than FO3, but this is expected since you can craft it.

Seen a lot of talk about trouble with hacking.

You get 4 tries. Use 3 then exit it. Its the little square button at the bottom right of the screen.

I'm really getting immersed now. I die a lot and I am often low on life and and scrounging for food from creatures I kill when I've been in the wild a while and out of stimpacks. I don't use fast travel.

Thanks for all the info and pointers so far.
