Though it is worthy of note, and quite appreciated, that I'm pretty sure Legion never gets called male in-game. In the English version, anyway. I don't know what kind of gender conjugation gets used when referring to them in the French translation, or whatever. I'd assume male, for the aforementioned reason.

Legion's more of a "them," really, anyway. But it's mostly a psychological thing. Our culture considers male the "default" and thus non-gendered sentient creatures are always considered male. (The male voice actor helps, of course, but you still get people calling Shale a "he" in the DA fandom, so...)

Gavin Archer refers to Legion as him or he IIRC.

Same reason EDI/Normandy is a "she".
This^
Plus people instinctively call Legion a him because he has a male voice. Just as EDI is a she for her female voice

Things tend to get fuzzy when dealing with gestalts.

it is a mix of the voice and the muscular build of the geth body. Legion is called him as we no longer see him as a machine but as a person. he has personality and adapts to situations. Legion is often funny and has a level of wonder to him. same with EDI the more time we spent with her the more personality we saw to the point where joker is joking and teasing her. after the collectors take the crew joker calls EDI her and she and openly trusts her
You may no longer see Legion as a Machine but some do. I call Legion "It" I don't call the Terminator he either. Nor would I call Skynet, a Cylon except the 13 models that are organic and operate exactly as a he/she should.

While reading through these forums, i have noticed that many people have been calling Legion a "he". But it is not. Infact, it doesn't mind being called an it. There is nothing that makes it a "he". Why can't we just refer to Legion as an it?
Ships are genderless, yet are referred to as "she".
Giving it a "he" or "she" makes it easier for humans to connect to.

In real life people refer to their cars, boats, ships and other vehicles as a she. Everything has a gender pronoun usually even inanimate objects unless otherwise specified.

It's the voice. As for the Shale, her voice sounds more like a cliche gay man's voice than it does a woman's voice. I thought she was a he until context made it clear she wasn't.

Second, it is in character for my Shepard to call him "he". In one word, my Shepard, as I would have him to be, declares to the galaxy how he views the geth and what respect he believes they are entitled to.
Third, it is a heck of a lot easier for us as a sapient race with pronouns to say "he said" rather than "it said." that sort of statement just doesn't work for us.
Finally, I say "he" vs "she" because Legion has a male voice actor.
