Okay, serious answer: however Bioware writes it, some players will scream "deus ex machina." As long as it isn't some reapers-were-just-misunderstood-let's-offer-them-hugs-and-scones-then-they'll-be-our-friends bull, I'll get over it. Ieldra2's link is pretty good.
Seriously, how do you want us to defeat the Reapers?

My using a virus on a crappy mac.
We will upload a virus to their central computer since, after all, we know this... its a Unix system (cue: 3D filesystem explorer flyby).
If your Shep is an engineer/tech class, you will do the uploading yourself. If you are a soldier/combat class you will fly a team engineer up to the central computer space station using a captured reaper flyer. If you are an adept/biotic class you will stay behind making silly comments and looking tense and mildly constipated as you send the team up to the central computer spaceship (which is conveniently parked in low Earth orbit and protected by nothing).
And voila! One defeated reaper race.

We don't have sovereigns firewpower. Most of Sovy'r reamains are lost (as stated by Anderson).
The Tanix is based on sovereigns "leg guns" (NOT the main cannon) and is nto as powerfull as the real thing. It gave Normany the firepower of a cruiser - and we all swa how cruiser shots affected Sovereign.
How do you know Sovereign had any other weapons besides his "leg guns?"
He never uses anything to attack besides his own mass to ram into ships and those
beams that shoot from his legs. See, now you're atrributing power to
him that he doesn't even have (overestimating him). His leg guns are his main guns. The codex affirms this. The Thanix Cannon giving the Normandy the firepower of a cruiser just means that it can deliver the same effective amount of fire onto a target with one gun that a cruiser can with all of its guns. Since cruisers are built to intrinsically carry more guns than Normandy-class ships, they can be outfitted with multiple Thanix Cannons and so increase their firepower even more (even equipping one Thanix Cannon to a cruiser would allow its firepower to be double that of the Normandy's.

Must every reaper be as strong as Sovereign? Nope. But you cna't assume that it's the only one. And they will come in numbers.
I never said that I assumed that Sovereign was the only ship of its kind. I said you were assuming that all Reapers must be as powerful as Sovereign and that you were ignoring other possibilities.
Lotion Soronnar wrote...
And also, upgrades don't happen over night. If you assume not every reaper will be as strong as Sovereign, then you have to assume that not every of our ships will be fully upgraded - if at all.
I don't have to assume anything. Again, listen to the Thanix Cannon Codex. The Turians (and humans) recovered Sovereign's remains that were considered "orbital debris" in 3 months and developed the Thanix Cannon just 8 months after that. In less than one year after the battle with Sovereign, the Turians were able to replicate Sovereign's main gun, albeit in a miniature size. Mass Effect 3 takes place 2 years and 6 months after the Battle of the Citadel. Do you really think that the Thanix Cannon, a gun which has proven to be effective in battle, was developed only so it couldn't be implemented and used?

Overestimations leads to being overpraperd and cautios. You may hesitate and miss a chance to strike.
I agree. Overestimation of your enemy leads to wasting valuable time and resources when you could have used them to attack and possibly destroy him and it also gives him the chance to out-maneuver you. It leads to preparing for him to do something that he can't actually do, and thus ignores and leaves you unprepared for the things he can do. The less you attack, the less chance you'll have at destroying the enemy, and the more chances you'll give your enemy to attack you. Unless you can win a war simply by not losing (which has happened throughout history), you won't win a war until you've removed the enemy's ability to fight (destroy their army, war factories, supply lines, remove their access to resourecs etc...). In the case of ME3, the galaxy's forces can't win the war by not losing it. They must destroy the Reapers to win it.

Underestimating leads to mobilizing assets too freely, and ending loosing them badly.
I agree.

While both can lead to defeat, the latter is far more likely to do so.
We'll have to agree to disagree.

1. Shepard puts together a big army, with upgrades.
2. Figures out a way to control the Mass Relays via the Citadel like the Reapers do.
3. Shuts them down in contested sectors to effectively cut them off from each other.
4. Destroy them one sector at a time with brute force.

On a serious note I bet there's going to be some kind of leader among the Reapers and we have to track down and destroy during an over the top boss fight, with lots of lights, and enemy gunfire. Oh and it's gonna be a solo mission:whistle:
