All jokes aside...I'm playing the game in full screen mode, everything seems to be running smoothly, and the screen shrinks up into what looks like window mode with about 2 inches of space around the outside. The mouse curser is trapped in the game window and the maximize square in the upper right corner of the window is greyed out. A re-check on options shows me that my full screen mode is still checked off.
Any suggestions on what causes this and how to prevent it?
Random screen shrinkage.

I've had it happen a while ago when my computers screen saver tried to start. If you alt+tab out of the game (to minimise it) then go back it it should pop back to full screen. I eventually turned off the computer screen saver completely.
If it happens while you're actively playing the game I don't know.
