This is the first fight I've really had a lot of trouble with.  Its the first major fight after the chantry gets blown up.  You see a blood mage on an alter, a bunch of demons pop up, and there's a giant purple demon who always wipes me out within a minute.  He puts out this giant blue tornado thing that I can't get out of and my entire party ends up dead.  Any suggestions?

whats the group make up?

Aggressive Behavior
Focus fire the blood mage first.
Once the mage is dead. back up to the entrance, spread out a little.
AoE tempest/Firestorm/Glyph of Paralysis
Anticipate the Crushing Prison field.
Pause when it gets cast, move just out of the area as needed.
Burn down shades.
It will get sloppy.  Move to the alter if you need more room to opperate.
Once all the shades are down, burn down the Pride Demon.

simple, kill the Bloodmage instantly, then you should scatter your party so that only one can get ccaught in the Pride Demons Crushing Prison. Kill the shades that pop up (try using nature or electric weapons). Then kill the Demon.

Hammer on the blood mage with some high damage single target spells then quickly get your party back to the stairs leading to lowtown. The Pride demon usually starts by trying to ram the party (much like an ogre) but it's easy to avoid. Run back to the stairs and keep an eye out for the demon's crushing prison spell (which first appears as a blue circle on the ground) making sure you're clear from it after the relatively long charge time has passed. Once you're at the stairs, a lot of shades will enter the fight. Since the stairs are a choke point, proceed with freezing them with a cone of cold spell then use any AOE abilities you have available (firestorm, tempest, rain of arrows, whirlwind -- Merrill's Wrath of the Elvhen works well here since the demons are vulnerable to nature damage -- )

Afterwards, if he isn't down yet, focus fire on the pride demon. He's not all that tough on his own though his spells can cause heavy damage if you're focused on fighting other enemies.

FWIW, the templar talent tree "cleanse" will disrupt the pride demon's aura. Every little bit, right?

i don't know if you can one-shot the female blood mage post-patch (dunno what rank she is), but first order of business should be taking her out.

if you're a mage, cast gravitic right on top of the pride demon, and deal with the shades.

if you're a rogue, smack him with some assassinate and heavy crits (but the prize, etc) via obscure + disorienting criticals

if you're an sns warrior, throw down some assault off a disorient for some damage cap ignoring fun

if you're a 2h warrior, cower and fail because they ruined the class

edit: more info about your party compositon would be helpful to give more accurate advice

Yeah the first time through that's a tough fight because of all the demons. I got through using whirlwind on a two handed warrior but that was pre-patch. I'm not sure how I did the battle latter on except to turn the difficulty down. Kill off the blood mage, kill off the demons, kill the Pride Demon and keep summoning Dog!
