Alistair, Dog, and my main (a DW Cunning-Based Rogue) have just been joined by a Circle Mage at the Tower of Ishal. The mage does not have any healing ability, unfortunately. Heal would have been nice.
How best to use the mage's abilities so that he does not draw aggro from Alistair, who is my tank and will have Shield Defense in sustain mode?
The mage has Arcane Bolt, Arcane Shield; Flame Blast, Flaming Weapons, Lightning; Weakness and Paralyze.
Alistair does not yet have Threaten or Taunt. Dog has Growl and Deep Howl. My Rogue has Improved Stealth, traps (5 Small Claw), poisons (2 Venom, 3 Deathwatch Extract, and one Concentrated Deathwatch Extract), grenades (3 Acid Flasks), and Combat Movement but not Coup de Grace, Momentum, or Lethality. I plan to use the Rogue mostly for backstabbing. Alistair and I also have longbows, and I have 20 fire arrows.
I have everybody set to use Lesser Health Poultices when their health is <= 50. There are about 10 poultices in my inventory.
Am playing at Normal difficulty.
Best Use of Ishal Circle Mage?

It shouldn't be too rough on normal setting on that area.
I'm no master gamer but am comfortable in nightmare. I use flame blast to get as many as possible, arcane bolt attack any and paralyze for close combat people. That way i can focus on my melee characters (my big love). Oh and weakness on the big baddies where applicable. Generally use him to support my guys who get stuck in.
Hope that helps a little.

I'd likely save the bombs, poisons, and traps for later in the game.
The mage can be set to paralyze higher ranked enemies, but that can also make him the target of the higher ranked enemies. Have to keep an eye on him depending on how he is set to act. Dog can always be set to protect the mage.
I'd probably control Alistair and let the rogue operate based on his tactics menu -- the rogue will likely do a better job of backstabbing that way than if you manually controlled him. I'd also have Alistair and the rogue set to attack the same enemy.
