I am currently getting the "You must have a hard drive to install this exspansion pack" problem since I have the 4GB Slim. I have the ultimate edition which has all the content on one disk so my question is is it possible to just download Awakening without having to download any of the other content for the time being? or with it just being a DLC will I actually have to get the hard drive to download it?

As I understand it you can choose what to install from the second disc of the Ultimate Edition (which, also as I understand it, includes Awakening and all the dlcs). You should be given the option upon loading as far as I am aware.
I would guess you will need to install the dlcs in order to use them, though I cannot confirm it.
EDIT: what worries me is that the message you are getting is something more problematic. But that's just my fear.

My console does not have enough space available for the entire expansion pack right now, I only want to know if there is a possible way to just download Awakening since I should have enough space just for that game alone.

That doesn't change my previous response, Taf. According to owners of the Ultimate Edition, the second disc allows you the choice of what to install. I assume from that that it includes Awakening. Whether you have enough space on your internal memory only you can comment on and hence make the necessary actions to do so.

I am receiving the same error message when I try to run the expansion disc. The first time I inserted it and update was downloaded followed immediately by a crash and the error message. Clearly the hard drive is connected because I can save things from other games.

I would suggest registering your game on the forum while you're here.
The HDD can be fickle (having had a related issue the other day), so the first thing I would suggest is to check whether it is connection problem.
The crash is a bit curious as I am unsure what it means for the 360 to crash (I have experienced freezes). For that though it may be worth clearing the cache in case there is some corrupt data there (link in sig).
