Well, from what I've read so far, it seems that there are considerable fanbases for all characters, some more than others, but still, quite some people for each, so my conclusion is that BioWare cannot satisfy all people beacause, let's say if they make a character a temporary squad member this will please the part of the people who dislike that particular character and upset that character's fanbase beacause their favorite character will play such a small role and they won't be able to explore him/her more in depth. I really hope BioWare is well aware of this particular issue regarding people's favorite characters and in my opinion I think that this can only be solved by letting people choose their favorite characters by asking/convincing them to remain with you at the start of the game as a squad mate or as a supporting character or by having all squad mates remaining with you and the decisions you will make will decide who remains with you and who leaves you, in that way you can choose the characters you want to stay and the ones you want to leave/turn on you, in that way you can choose to explore with the characters you like and the ones you dislike to leave. I really think that if BioWare will choose to make squad members by the number of people in their fanbases permanent it will be a great loss beacause first of all it will give the impression of a linear game where people may feel that they cannot shape the universe around them, wich by the way no BioWare game i've seen does this (eg: DAO, where you can refuse to recrute some characters) and it may give a money grabing impression of the company beacause people may think that beacause a seemingly majority of people prefers some characters and they make them permanent it may seem insensitive of the preferences of the minority who dislike those characters, but anyway, since they postproned the release of Mass Effect 3 for '12, and they stated that they would like to appeal to a wider variety of people let's hope they will follow this course of development, if you got other ideas on how to please as many people as possible please tell, i'm sure BioWare will read it, oh and FYI people this isn't a thread about character X is gonna be permanent or not, so please don't tell their names, just general talk of them!

I have been harping on about a similar ideal for some time now....I really do hope BW does something like this....basically being able to choose our own squads from the ME games squad pool.

Like formatting, apparently, your suggestion would require far too much work to be realistic.

Has BW actually stated they won't be taking this route though?...If so please let me know where?

Yes, because the game is probably mostly done already.

I agree. They would have to really put in a lot of work on the squaddies; it would just be way too much work. The crew should just be integrated into the story  with some having more pull than others.

Thats the question...who and why.

It's just not gonna happen, especially not that the game is in final production and there's zero chance for changes like that.

Yes, they have, in the GameInformer article in March. Basically, they said some characters would be core to the story, in Casey Hudson's words "those around the story revolves", others would join you just for a mission or so and others would have cameo appearances.

So there will be a clear hierarchy in the characters. The "main" characters will get more banter and more screen time, while others will be sidelined to some degree. To which degree, that remains to be seen. How many "main" characters there will be also remains to be seen, but I doubt it will be more than 8. Also note that apparently main characters need not be plot-critical, since Garrus and Tali were confirmed as main characters even though they can die in ME2.

Yeah, I like the idea of being able to choose who stays with you throughout the game while simultaneously sloughing off or denying squaddies that are not your faves.

It should be left up to the writers, not the player answering questions at the beginning of the game. I know this may mean that Grunt or Zaeed might not have as big a role as I'd like to see them have (or they may have a huge impact, who knows...), but I'm okay with this.

The story comes first for me. If that means that I only get a couple of side missions with someone, so be it. For instance, I would think Legion would definitely have more importance than Thane. Would I like to se Thane? You bet. Should he get as much attention as Legion? Probably not.

look at what this says on Mass effect 3 wikia:
Release EditMass Effect 3 will be released March 6, 2012, as announced during the E3 2011 Mass Effect 3 premiere.[2] The game was originally slated for a 'Holiday 2011' release but was delayed to "[ensure] that it exceeds everyone's expectations"[3] and "address a far larger market opportunity."[4] Prior to that, Ray Muzyka had stated that the release timing would be based on maximising both "quality" and "commercial success"

so this might be an evidence they might be going into this direction, and who sayed the game is almost completed, it still has months of production to go and i don't think there is that much effort involved, i mean they won't be like you can have over 50 conversations with each, just 2 or 3 talks with the characters that are optional and the rest could be calibrations... don't think it's that hard to put a few unique dialogues for those less important characters...

Casey Hudson said that at this point they're so far into production they couldn't even put an additional cameo in. But then, that's now (a few days ago), who knows what they did since March.

Yes, I know about that March article...there just seems to be a lot changes made on so many levels since then....the recent live stream at EA seemed to be taking quite a different approach.

Would love to permanently keep those I have combat synergy with...too many are permanently left on the Normandy aside from their LM's in ME1 & 2 due to the fact that I just find them a complete pain in the *ss combat wise...Also there's the who I would like to explore further and who I just don't feel compelled to do so....would be great to have a full permanent squad we enjoy.

Here's the problem with your idea TC, if you could choose from all the squad members, which ones you wanted at the beginning. That would mean each one has to be designed to be there from the start; they would have to have dialogue on the ship, one the missions, romances would have to written to be started from the beginning etc.

If their going to do all that, they might as well just have them all available for the entire game. They would have already done all the hard work, so why not use it. I think the idea may be to avoid having to do that for 15 characters.

I don't think the Xbox crowd will be happy with a four-disc game.

The Xbox croud wont care about a 4 disc game. It means we're getting our moneys worth.

The more discs the merrier I say.

My point wasn't in general preference, more towards what's sane and fitting to current industry standards. And also in what's POSSIBLE in current industry standards.
