It's viral marketing.  Everyone on the forums already knows about ME3 and is a fan of Bioware, so they aren't going to get any exposure by putting a poll here.  However, if you vote on Facebook, then that appears in your news stream, and people who have never heard of Shepard will be exposed to the Mass Effect Facebook page. Simple, effective, and free.

It's actually pretty darn brilliant when it comes down to it. Even the controversy goes to their favor.

It's tantamount to taking the majority of a group of people and lumping them with a subset that are criminals and look like them so that you can view them all as criminals.  In other words, painting everyone with the same brush because they aren't representative of (or different from) you.

You know what I can't imagine? They've created all of these potential looks and hairstyles for this contest, and then once they lose the poll, the code is stripped from the game and you can't use them.

I think the alternate hairstyles etc will be in the editor.

The red head wasn't my first choice, but at this point, I don't care which one wins anymore. I'm glad we're getting a FemShepard with the level of detail the Sheploo has. I'll be using her regardless of her hair color.

Perhaps you can illustrate to me where I called them "Ginger Whiners" I don't believe I have referred to them in that manner what so ever.  It is widely said that there were lots of comments from people in the blonde femshep picture section that said "this one but with red hair".  I personally saw just as many comments from people going "woo blonde femshep wooo" but I guess those comments weren't important.  Hence why I have "labelled" that it is the ones primarily wanting a red head that have managed to instigate another poll where they get to vote exactly what they want.  I did not call them "whiners" that is your creation.

I also see a lot of people saying "Shep can't be blonde because blondes were rare" and completely oblivious to the fact that redheads are near extinct in Mass Effect.

I love how you got defensive when I wasn't even talking about you.

Also you did mention that people who wanted ginger sheps were butt hurt that blonde shep won.

Now how is it that the ones who primarily wanted a red head wanted another poll? I saw posters who wanted many different other colors not just red hair.

Is... is this sarcasm?  I'm honestly not sure if your entire post was intended as a parody.

George Lucas made 3 amazing films which are considered by many as classics. He did this while not having full control of the work, collaborating with other people and taking their input - sometimes being forced to take their input even if he didn't like it.

Then he made 3 prequels to those movies, prequels which are widely considered some of the worst films ever made. He made these films with no collaboration with other artists, following soley his own vision of what he thought was good and ignoring most criticism of that vision.

George Lucas is the best example you could name to prove that Bioware has got it right.

While I admit George Lucas isn't the best example I could've used, the point still stands.  The original SWT was great because GL and his friends or whoever made it that way just like the earlier Bioware games were great without fan votes.  Sure there were compromises and sacrifices made between developers, creators, producers, and whatnot but that's still better than handing control over certain elements to the masses.  Call me old school but I'd rather not have my art governed by mass consensus.

Having input from multiple places is cool but deciding what actually gets put into a project should only decided by a handful of people.  Too many chefs spoil the broth.

I thought I read somewhere that it was a misconception about Vikings being mostly blond. That in fact, they were all sorts of ethnic varieties simply because of the merging with kidnapped slaves and such. Wish I could find where I read it.

Personally, I didn’t see the blond femshep looking too “badass” either. That boils down to opinion and not fact, though.
