I don't know how I would work this out, but I decided to put the numbers up.

For the first poll the total number of votes up until 3:43pm est is 72763. That's not total number for any one, but for all 6 together.

The total votes for the second poll (again, all votes together) as of the time indicated above is 40734.

Now I don't know what can be determined from this as making a vote for one doesn't rule out that you can vote for another or all of them. So that is going to be a factor. I don't know how messy or clean finding where the majority lies out of both polls will be. Someone may want to take a stab at it I guess.

It's almost impossible with internet voting to find out what the voter "demographic" is.  You also have to take into account how many people who heard of this at comicon are voting this time, how many people at gamescon are voting this time, how many people other than BSN users know of second poll etc.  It's really hard to say.  What you can do is look at the results and use common sense to see how votes are transitioning.  I think we can make the following assumptions:

-Those who voted for anything but Blonde Femshep 5 are more likely to vote against her again.  So most of the votes for other Femsheps will be split among black/red hair Shep, especially if they don't like blondes (which also excludes dirty blonde).  That's a big % of votes against femshep 5, possibly even more than who voted for her in poll 1 and especially after the negative blonde talk.

-Those who wanted another hair colour seemed to prefer either black or red in most cases.  Again, the majority of these people will split their vote for black/red sheps.  They seem to be a large group too.  Maybe 25%-50% of the original Femshep 5 vote, not counting the people who may have changed their mind in round 2 to about Blonde.

-Those who really like blonde shep over black/red options may still like dirty blonde better, further splitting blonde shep vote.  Might take off about 25%-50% of the remaining Femshep 5 vote.

That easily explains why Blonde Shep's polling is really low right now compared to before.

The more you present your arguments, Balek, the more you make it sound like the first vote was the unfair one, not the second vote. Because people had to compromise what they actually wanted in order to vote for something that was 'close enough'.

Possibly the only way to make that first vote 'fair' was to have the choice of 4 hair colors for each choice. But just thinking about that makes me think that I wouldn't even want to vote in that poll. Too much choice, it just gets annoying. And I'm a huge fan of Bioware and FemShep; the casual voter, the ones Bioware is trying to get interested in Mass Effect, wouldn't have voted at all.

I think the kind of exacting, ultra-perfect 'fairness' you're looking for never would have been possible on a facebook poll to begin with.

Yes it does seem like the first vote is unfair when you really start looking at the numbers and notice "Well most people voted against Femshep 5 than who voted for it."  However it was fair, because it was simple:

-One Poll
-6 variations of Femshep presented to us as "Final Versions"
-We vote for the one we like best
-The one that gets the most votes becomes Femshep on Collectors Edition ingame

That is about as straightforward and fair as you get, if you keep the voting in those very simplistic parameters.  Although a majority wanted something else (whatever that something else is), the process naturally compromises on the option voted for the most.  That means no one really has any reason to complain other than people didn't think the same way they did.

It's like picking straws for doing something no one wants to do.  The process is very simple and fair (if there's no cheating) with a one time pick.  The person who picks crap straw has to stay behind and die like in the movies.
Image IPB

It does become unfair if a popular guy got the bad straw and then they decide on a runoff vote between him and the guy who picked the first straw.  All of a sudden it's unfair because you're adding in dimensions which the original setup didn't take into account.  Even more so if the guy that got a good straw loses in next round.

Edit:  As I keep typing these posts I forget another aspect about this whole thing.

Bioware really wants a Femshep that appeals to the most people across the board.  The usual way (I think) to do this is to have internal controlled testing and polling to see how each Femshep version appeals to what type of person.  From there you can release the "final product" and most likely the majority of people will say:  Awsome.

However, they also wanted to use Femshep for marketing before they finish Femshep and allow fans a say at the same time.  Poll 1 would be fine if they already tested the appeal of the Femsheps they made.  If they didn't, then they may be worrying that even though Femshep 5 won big, there were a lot of people who didn't like her too and might cause an appeal problem.

With the second poll, they have begun a problematic situation where they're now allowing uncontrolled "test groups" to determine appeal, which could lead to a mismatch of poll results and something that doesn't appeal to anyone in the end.

That's sort of a worst case scenario.  It does come back to my main point which is stick with one poll.  That way you're not making a "two wrongs don't make a right situation."  It's to late to go back on poll 2, but there doesn't need to be a third one.

This debate reminds of the Shepard's dialogue with Jacob.   Image IPB

Actually to the people who say you cant see the change in low res, you can very well. You look at 3 of them with a nice white nose than you go look at the Redhead one and you see some kind of smudge on her nose. Yes you may not be able to see them being freckles but you can sure see there is some kind of difference.

But whoever wins I hope at PAX they show the winner by showing the femshep Trailer :D

Original #3, #4 and #6 supporters can't vote for their favourite femshep anymore, but they can vote against the one who beat them during the first poll. #5 supporters have every right to be pissed.

Just because a person can doesn't mean that they will.  I voted for #3, #4, and #6 the first time around but chose the blonde one in the second most recent poll.  I thought she looked the most natural of the current four.

But there were all types of prejudiced comments in the first round.  Some people said that #1 wasn't feminine enough and some outright didn't vote  for #4 because they felt that "Commander Shepard should never be black."(That's a direct quote, btw.) Some of those comments were pretty gross, and I'm not going to even touch the "Rihanna Shepard" comments.

That being said, I am hoping that after this vote, this will all be over.  I just want a FemShep trailer at this point and I don't care who is being pictured.

During the first poll some people behaved badly but now some have become downright hostile. If the way how people interact during the second poll is any indicator, I would say it's more than just likely that most if not all will vote against #5.

Well honestly I stayed out of the first thread completely.  But my observation of this thread suggests that there are may 25 - 50 people who have posted here. And only a handful of those have been arguing heatedly.  That's only a teeny tiny percentage of people who voted in the poll. Plus BSN is full of the worst of humanity anyway. It's not a great representation of who has or hasn't voted on the facebook poll, or their reasons.

I'm not a big fan of the hairstyle, personaly, because I don't like how long hair looks in game, very unnatural. And because I like to roleplay, a long hair in the battlefield doesn't sound like a good idea ;)

I would like something like this, with bun or ponytail in the back:

but for the moment, I'm not complaining about wining Shepard, she has character and I like it :)

lol I'm the exact opposite. Especially when I see miranda running and shooting in the battle field with her long hair blowing in the breeze, with her skin tight suit and high pumps...it make me my shepard a bit jealous. >.>
But I love your shepard. So much better than the first 3 from the first poll.

It's stuff like the farce that their voting contest(s) have turned into because of poor handling that keeps turning me away from them.

I really want to be excited for ME3 and was so the first time I saw the first trailer. But their marketing and actions just keeps making me facepalm and wonder why I'm even bothering hoping for the game.

If anything, they have succeeded in marketing themselves out of a sure sale to me into me just waiting for it to go on sale now. I can't be the only one, and I'm wondering if these antics they are going through are actually supplying them with new sales to cover the ones they are loosing for behaving like this.

Dude, their marketing has never been particularly great, and hasn't served as a particularly good indicator of the quality (or lack thereof) of the final products.  Don't see why you should suddenly decide to lend it such credence now, for this one game.

Maybe, but that does not mean that it is not true. I wasn't talking about the BSN exclusively, but I can see your point.

Blonde Shepard from the original poll had almost as many votes herself as were cast in the entirety of poll #2.

This is an absolutely epic cluster**** of poor decision making. Whoever decided to have a second poll should be fired.

Sigh. Well we're still here, aren't we?  We haven't removed ourselves in order to remain clean of the taint. Were we truly without darkness, we could not reside in this poison without either death or madness.

"Deal with it!"

oh and 73,000 votes in three weeks vs 41,000 in three days? I don't think you statement will still be true in 3 weeks time.

And how many times now has it been pointed out, the majority of those who voted for #5 in round 1 wanted a different color.

Must we keep going round in circles?

They should lose their job in this economy because you're in a snit over a poll about videogame box art?  You're a wonderful person, you know.
