And how is Africa represented. Get out of your box. Racism is still widely accepted in many aspects of america.

Yes it is, but the notion that changing the cover art to represent an altered version of an established canon character isn't going to change that any more than having a black president somehow miraculously meant that America wasn't racist anymore.

It would be nice to see more diversity in protagonists in games, but shoehorning different skin-colours into games to meet a quota is hardly empowering. Neither is whining that it should be done.

Because we all know "White Shepard Support thread - no blacks pls" would be wholly welcomed as 100% acceptable, right?

Are blacks represented as much as whites? NOOOOO

So until then....that argument is invalid.

Represented in what?

In Africa they're represented quite highly. What with them being predominantly black people.

The West consists of predominantly white people and so their media/entertainment reflects that.

Why should they be represented as much? Seeing as how black people represent about 10% of the population in the west, a "fair" representation would be 10%. Not 50%.

The whole premise of this thread is ridiculous.

I know, let's go to African or Asian forms and complain about that white people aren't represented as much as they are in their movies and games.

And how is Africa represented. Get out of your box. Racism is still widely accepted in many aspects of america.

Yeah, we're so racist that we elected a black president./sarcasm

@ Montezuma

As an Australian heavily involved in Aboriginal politics, tradition and rights, spilling over in spades to include Maori's and Native Americans/Canadians....You had my support in the other thread Montezuma....but have certainly now sucked the support out of me with this threads carry on.....Is a pity.

I don't think it's a misrepresentation of black people. There are a lot of different ethnicities present in Mass Effect, even your Shepard can be black.

Another point I would make is that this game is played in a lot of western countries that arn't America. I live in Europe, more specificlly Scotland, and according to official figures 0.16% of this country is made up of people who describe their ethnicity as black. Does this mean I should be making threads to get Bioware to make Mass Effect 99.84% white? Of course not.

The femsheps availible did include a black Shepard, it was very popular. It came second. People voted it more popular than the other four that came in behind it. However, one thing you need to accept is that it was a vote. Everyone had their say and most people voted for #5. This being a democratic vote meant that the person who had the most votes won. To suddenly get Bioware to change that would be to disregard the majority. That would be unfair.

If I were to make a comparison to real life perhaps a good example would be the last American presidentail election. John McCain came second. He too was popular, but not as popular as Obama. Barack Obama was declared the winner because he had the most votes. Would it then be fair to listen to the republicans who were put out by the decision and make McCain president even though he lost? Of course not.

Just because you spat out your dummy when #4 didn't win doesn't mean anyone has been mis-represented or that anyone is being ignored. It just means the one you wanted to win didn't. I don't think anyone should be lobbying Bioware to change anything just because things didn't turn out the way you wanted them to.

Seriously OP. Mass Effect is a Canadian game. You seriously don't expect default Shepard to look like an African right?
Edit: I am an Asian.

Racism was invented in the early 1600's in Europe to justify the institutionalized slavery of an entire people. Since many of the people in Europe would naturally think of this as abhorrent, the ruling class, who was profiting exponentially off of the free labor provided, had to find a way to make it seem justified by claiming blacks were mere fractions of a whole person, and thus, by enslaving them, they were in reality doing what was best for them.

This belief spread to, who would best be described today as 'poor white trash' who were ecstatic to finally have someone below them. Flash forward to today and you have the internet. Which is almost entirely populated by nobodies. People who are less than nothing, and are completely useless and insignificant. But through the internet they can have a mask to protect them from the big bad world and they are free to say whatever they wish. And as with the poor white trash of the past, they can give themselves a momentary self esteem boost by belittling someone. Which is why aside from the Tea Party, you'll find most racist on the internet. But you can't let the few nobodies who desperately want to be heard blind you to the changes that have occurred.

Yes, racism is still a large problem but it has gotten better. In all media forms infact. And I have never felt bioware had a problem with this seeing as how some of their best characters were black. Jolee Bindo <3

Anyway, sure it would be nice to see a black Shep seeing as how I'm black, but I wouldn't mind a latino shep, or asian one. The best thing would be for people to realize that 'races' are a social invention that have no basis on fact since there are no genetic differences between any races to differentiate them. White people's gene for skin pigment stopped being expressed since at the time Europe was a tundra and they needed sunlight to penetrate their epidermis. Asian people's eyes altered shape to compensate for the reflective snows and winds. People in Africa stayed black since that was most suitable for the environment. That's it. Anywhoo just wanted to give my 2 cents before the thread was closed lol.

Racism was invnted in the 1600's?

Human's co-inhabited this world with other species of humans, we drove them to extinction 40 000 years ago, that wasn't racism? 6000 years ago when the canaanites were enslaved by the egyptians, no that can't have been racism. When being jewish was made illegal in 167BC and the animals they considered kosher were sacrificed at alters to the greek God's, well that can't have been racist it wasn't invented yet.

I could go on but my point is black people were not the first, last or only people to be persecuted, that are still to this day discriminated against. Don't get me wrong what happened to those people then was descpicable, but it's not a new development, humanity has a great capacity for hatred. It's a sad but true fact.

The rest of your point however I agree with, but all are accommodated in Mass Effect. If they had been discriminatory I'd have been amoung the first to complain. However discrimination is one thing Bioware cannot be accused of.

1.  Humans didn't actively try to wipe them out.  They simply couldn't adapt and went extict.  Warfare didn't even exist until cities started being built.  Their was the occasional raid for women, resources, but thats it.  No, one really had anything worth killing eachother over
2.Jews were persecuted for their religious beliefs.

We did have an active role in the wiping out of the neanderthal, there have been a few sites where bones of each species has been found in the caves of the other.

Jews being persecuted is just as racist as any other form of racism. Racism isn't exclusively ethnic discrimination. Not to mention that a few of the early kings of Scotland should have been black but they weren't because they were black, that was some 500/400 years prior to the 17th century. Racism against black people and indians etc is also known to have existed in the ancient world of Egypt and Greece and Rome. Not in the mass scale of the 17th century but it still happend.
