And my 2 cents. I'm kinda surprised BioWare didn't got for the all-races-mixed look for the default/marketing Shepard (like Anderson has and Kaidan to some degree). I mean, it would've been just perfect, represent an important fact about the humanity in the in-game lore and also be inclusive of many groups of players at the same time due to the all-races-mixed roots.

THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING! Why are there still pale red heads everywhere! (that was an exaggeration for all you idiots, I mean basically why so many pale whites)

Oh stop this bullcrap.

If you really cared about that then why are you not complaining about 100% black Jacob?

You don't give a damn about mixed ethnicities being represented, you just want black representation.

Just admit it and be done with this charade.

Hell, even the original title of this thread was "BLACK Support Thread 2.0" before you edited it to "Multiracial".

Still don't see it. Fast painting. I'm not an artist. And I wanted to use the new shepards. Particulary the most popular one.

The point is that you originally painted a white woman black as a representation of "black people". This is considered racist, because it is akin to an era (particularly in America) when blacks -- who weren't allowed in any form of media -- were instead acted by whites who painted their faces and lips black.

Second, I am black. I've stated it a few times on the forum, along with the fact that I am 21, and colorblind (and I like to drink a lot while I'm browsing the web). My two Shepards are Orion and Olivia. Orion is black and Puerto Rican, and Olivia is Puerto Rican and Greek. But that's not the main point.

The point is that you want racial equality in games. Great. So do I, even though I (who have been gaming since I was 12) can clearly see that race isn't a negative issue in gaming. It is just an issue that is rarely ever brought up. There isn't a huge media black lash against games with black characters. There simply just aren't many ethnic characters. This isn't an issue of racial insecurity, but probably one of things like marketing, development team racial/gender makeup, etc etc. This that are far more complex than your thesis argument could ever possibly cover.

And finally, gaming characters, TV characters, book characters, movie characters, etc etc aren't divided up by men, women, and blacks. They are divided into men and women. The same goes with Shepard. We DON'T need a "Support Commander Shepard" thread AND a "Support Black Commander Shepard" thread.

Shepard is whoever you want him/her to be a better title to support would be "custom Shepard" rather than dividing/categorizing on top of division and categorization. This is like making a romance thread specifically for renegade's or paragon's versions of the romance.

Take a second and breath. Imagine if it had been a black female's face scribbled over white. That would have cause outrage as well. I'm a mixed female (Black and white as a matter of fact) and found your picture humerous. Unforunately not everyone has the sense of humor. **** happens people become offended, it's just a matter of looking at the other person's perspective.

OP, I like that you're for bringing in more diversity. I would like more diversity in gaming as there aren't many (if any) positive portrayals of any ethnicity other than White in North America and Europe, but what you did to that image of Shepard is the same thing as what people did to Isabela in DA2 with their mod. It's racist and uncalled for in every sense.

Do you know how much trouble Robert Downey Jr. almost got in for this:

It's something called "blackface" initially used by minstrel singers to mock black people, read up on it:

He didn't deserve to get in trouble for that though. That whole character was making fun -- not of black people, but of the "blackface" cutout in media. They even had another black character in the movie to balance it out.

Not to mention Downey Jr. is frickin hilarious.

I really don't see a need for this kind of thread. I get the feeling that most people only care how badass and cool he/she is. And when people post their Shepard pics, some of the coolest face codes being asked for and shared are multiracial. And what's more, the Mass Effect universe is a big one, and filled with plenty of other colorful people. I think this game is plenty multiracial already.

What I find funny about the whole situation with RDJ and Tropic Thunder is that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were trying to sue him and crap and the NAACP goes and gives him award for it and Al Sharpton has to present him with it.

It must have been JUST like the end of Iron Man 2 receiving the award.

Yet it is not racist.
It is ignorant/insensitive at best.

Curséd political correctness.

You know, reacting the way you do doesn't make you any better.

Regardless of how the portrayals of ethnicity is being brought in the OP is at least opening the matter up for discussion.  I won't say that you should make derisive comments about the OP, but I will point out that you are mocking the discussion instead of addressing the OP directly.  It speaks volumes, whether you mean it or not, about how very little you actually view the discussion and maybe those who have the view that (and I hate to use the word) minorities don't get a fair positive representation in the hero role.

To be fair there's no real discussion to be had here. The OP left. And judging by the OP's profile, he's neither American nor black -- so what ever his intentions were, they were probably marred by an understandable lack of knowledge of how racism is treated in the West.

Be that as it may there's still no absolving the idea that someone is openly mocking the potential for a discussion on the topic to be had.

On a separate (but not too much) matter: There are many occurrences of people bringing up topics to make crude comments about them and finding out that they had started a discussion that actually became fruitful, and sometimes, progressive.  In a very strong case of irony this could be that discussion.

Twizz089 wrote...

Probably two reasons:  1) There are people who won't try to be progressive and let racism die.  2) We're too close to what was before.  So when we see certain things it brings those ideas that hold us back to the forefront to look at again.

The constant depictions of white heroes is not lost on a great many people.  Even me.  I never wanted to think about racism and really just wanted the human race to progress and move beyond it, but I'm always reminded about how someone doesn't look like me or the worst bit..."the brother always gets it".  That last bit is a direct quote from Darius Mccrary (hope I spelled that right) who voiced Jazz in the first Transformers movie.

Another thing that comes to mind is JJ Abram's spy show getting cancelled.  It might not have anything to do with racism, but many have the idea that people weren't interested in the idea of a Black couple being depicted the way they were "because it's unrealistic".  It was the only show in recent history (I know of) that showed a Black couple who:
  • were happily married
  • had no baby mama/baby daddy drama
  • didn't live in the projects
  • didn't use or abuse drugs or drink
  • didn't behave irresponsibly towards their obligations
  • actually worked together to solve any issues they had
The fact that it was a drama and not a comedy is also not lost on many people.  Also quite evident is the fact that there are practically no shows in that same venue (drama) that have an Asian, Indiginous American, or Middle-Eastern person/group/couple in prominent roles.  Considering how long at least two of the aforementioned group has been around in North America I find that to be a problem as well.  It's infinitely easier to find them in comedies and even in said comedies most are co-stars rather than stars with the recent examples being Breaking In, Community, and Outsourced.

This whole fiasco is quite regrettable. I'm all for a support thread for multiracial Shepards, I probably would have posted mine, in fact... but the effort was sabotaged right from the start by the OP who took a picture of the blonde ME3 femshep and drew brown lines all over her face. It only went downhill from there.
