Oh, I thought this thread was about me. I am absolutely right about everything.

Regardless I actually liked both soundtracks. I'd rather have them not repeat ME1's soundtrack style again.

I think the Hollywood approach has its merits, The Suicide mission theme was stellar. However, for generally setting the tone ME1 had better music.

I can honestly say that a certain period of approximately 1 minute and 30 seconds during Arrival had more emotional impact for me than the vast majority of time I spent playing Mass Effect 2. The soundtrack being the primary contributor to this (followed closely by the visuals and sound for the SR2...)

The soundtrack was great in ME2, but yes - a certain mysterious atmosphere was lost in the second. It doesn't quite have the same resonance as the first did.

Vigil, enough said. I could loop that for an hour and not get bored of it.

He is right but you have to admit the ME 2 soundtrack is still good for what it is.
I'm a bit concerned about what Clint Mansell does for the soundtrack though. I have doubts he'll pull off a soundtrack as good as ME 1 let alone ME 2...he did do the soundtrack for Moon but the Moon soundtrack is a bit different to Mass Effect.

I love them both for different reasons but did miss the synthesizers in ME2 a little at first, they are there, they're just more nuanced. The only Mansell music I'm familiar with is the Moon OST and PWEI,

I'm really looking forward to hearing the new Deus Ex soundtrack now.

Some of you are forgetting an important fact. That game soundtracks are designed to give the feeling of the game while playing the game. Yes, we are separately listing to them due to their greatness but the main reason of designing the soundtracks is not that.

For me ME1 soundtracks are good to listen separately but when it comes to giving the thrill of the game, ME2 soundtracks are much better. They may not stay in your memory after few months but while playing the game they work much better.

Since we are talking about music, I like to share this with you. I found it recently and I consider that as one of the best music I ever heard.

Anybody else feel this way? Anbody else hope that Mansell will draw inspiration from ME's classic sci-fi samples rather than ME2's cinematic themes?

I love that you were critical, yet constructive about this. The forums have been so negative lately.

I do heartily agree--I want Mansell to look at what the series has done before and do it his way, but keep it Mass Effect. If he can do that, if he can give us his interpretation of what the Mass Effect universe sounds like, weaving in the old melodies where it makes sense but doing them his way, and creating new melodies for whatever is strictly new (Thessia, for instance) then I will love him forever and ever and ever.

Otherwise, I will not love him anymore, because I am a fan and I do have my moments of nerdrage. The music is so important in Mass Effect, and ME1's music was so much better than ME2's overall. There's a faint edge of "corny" with a side of "cheesy", not "blockbuster," to ME2's main theme. Not that there aren't very nice pieces in ME2, but about half of the most important ones could've been better.

I really hope, and I do believe, that Mansell will look at Mass Effect for what it is and not drastically change the musical style to sound like Mozart instead of the future. If anything, he might make it even better. After all, it's not like he hasn't done electronica before.

The man knows a thing or two about experimental sound.

ME1 ost was THE best, I cannot understand how anybody can think otherwise, are you seriously saying that any of the music from ME2 was as iconic or memorable as ME1?!!!

You've got the ME original theme, you've got the Spectre Induction theme, you've got the Alien queen theme, you've got the Vigil's theme, From the Wreckage you have have every track being emphatic and fantastic and memorable. I can't think of many other osts that had such a huge impact to me. Not to mention you had M4 Pt2 which was incredible as the credits rolled.

What did ME2 bring to the table? end run? suicide mission? collector base? theres like one or two tracks on that entire ost which are decent.

The ME1 ost is 100% better than the ME2 ost. I'm not going to go into whether you like ME1 or ME2 as a game or based on its gameplay, I find it impossible to understand how anyone can think the ME2 ost is better than the ME1 ost.

I am super passionate about this and I will arm wrestle anyone who disagrees lol.

The soundtrack for me1 is vastly superior to that of me2, to the point where me2 was almost ruined by the soundtrack alone.
I really, REALLY hope we get a nice 80s sci-fi themed soundtrack for the me3.

Also me1>me2. This is not an opinion, this is fact.

Though I believe ME2 is the better game in almost every way I will always prefer the soundtrack of the first. Then again I've always loved the sound of a synthesizer and the atmosphere it can create.

I still listen to the suicide mission... this track is just outstanding.

It's the only track I like from that soundtrack. I never really cared for the rest of the tracks on either ME soundtracks. Well, maybe M4 - Faunts Part 2 (if I recall the name of the track right). Sad thing is that the most of the music in nowday games tries to be too movie-like. So they lack the punch and feeling, resorting to level of elevator music that just plays on the background.

I wish we would have more tracks that have impact, instead of being reduced to background noise.

I enjoy both soundtracks, but generally prefer the ME1 soundtrack for atmospheric immersion. The synthesized sound of it was quite unique.

ME2 had some good themes too though, I particularly like the battle music from Overlord from some reason.

Both soundtracks have their qualities. Overall ME1 is better, but ME2 has suicide mission. And a whole bunch of others.

ME1: Better concept

ME2: Better execution

Hell, come to think of it that applies to a lot more than just the soundtrack.

I think you've just summed up Mass Effect.

I personally prefer most stuff about ME2, including some of the soundtrack stuff. The Suicide Mission and the Illusive Man soundtracks are amazing.

However, I preferred the general 'feel' of the ME1 soundtrack, particularly Vigil. And the Faunts song was an inspired choice.

I found a few tracks on the ME 1 soundtrack that I really liked. That being said I still love Samara's and Kasumi's themes.

You mean this track?

Easily my favorite combat theme in all of the Mass Effect games.

This is where I'll let everyone have their own subjective opinion and stop watching the video before I get a headache.

I'll hum the Suicide Mission track instead.

There were definitely some bits from 2 I loved. This sticks in my mind.

Also, Uplink, from my point of view one of the most atmospheric pieces in the whole series.

Suicide mission in ME2 is absolutely spectacular. Yep, terrific, and then there was.....

ME1 had the ME theme, Spectre induction, The normandy, the Citadel, Therum theme (Not battle music), Noveria theme, Form the wreckage, The presidium, protect the colony etc.

Endless amounts of music that set a terrific atmosphere. Then ME2 has the terrific suicide mission, and everything else is ridiculously generic.

Can't wait to see what clint mansell comes up with though, i love his music. Moon had the most atmospheric music ever.

The "synthesized" sound that ME1 had in it's soundtrack is actually one of the very few things I didnt like about the first ME. (I can count on one hand the features I didnt like about ME1). ME2's soundtrack, (and it guess this may be the arguement?) sounded more "modern" and I happen to like modern sounds.

That's not to say that ME1's soundtrack wasnt "good". ME1's soundtrack fit well in the setting it presented. As did ME2's in my opinion. To me, had they simply "remixed" or even "reapplied" the first game's soundtrack to ME2, it might have taken a little bit away from the experience for me. ME2's soundtrack fit the atmosphere of the "dark and gritty underworld" feel. Where as ME1's felt more "sunshine and rainbows" for lack of a better way of putting it.

Again, not taking away from ME1 in the least Im just saying that each game's respective soundtracks fit the intended ambience in my opinion. I have yet to listen to the soundtrack for ME3 but once again, Im sure it will fit the intended "feel" of the game so Im not worried (in that regard) in the least.

personaly i liked the music from ME2 better as an action soundtrack. but ME1 actualy had an otherworldly feel. so a combination of both soundtracks would be best. from what i heard of clint mansel his music is beautifull but its all very serene or high fantasy Epic... but no real action soundtracks that i've been able to find.

Arrival had a nice mix of ME1 and ME2 styles, shoulda been that way in ME2.  The only part there really came through for me in the suicide mission was the long walk in the biotic bubble.  Ilos is still on top for me especially for it's setting in the game and location, I don't think anything in ME2 has come close to it yet.  Citadel Tower in Flames is a good one as well.
