Tali's recruitment, Samara's theme, Kasumi's theme, the whole Arrival soundtrack are perfect for me ;)

I feel like if I were in the ancient republic of Rome, with his main theme for ME1

ME1's levels are much bigger. A great proportion of them are outdoor exploration sequences - Therum is a great example. These kind of levels are more suited for a synthetic soundtrack like ME1's, but they are mostly absent from ME2. ME2's indoor sequences are a lot like Hollywood blockbuster action films, so naturally they fit the same type of soundtrack.

Personally I think Clint Mansell will come up with something that is in between/a mixture. His previous works indicate that. Also ME3 will have much larger levels than ME2, we are told, and yet there still appears to be many indoor combat sequences like in ME2.

Mass Effect's soundtrack had a very futuristic and spacey feel. I made me feel like I was in space. It may have been better in that it made me feel a part of the Mass Effect universe, but ME2's was better. When I heard Suicide Mission, it made Mass Effect finally seem like a Space Epic to me. That theme fired me up.

ME1 had the best sound tracks by far but ME2 had a couple of good ones (Arrival, Kasumi, SM, Samara, Tali and Overlord) with Arrival having the best sound track in ME2

I really have a hard time figuring out where people are coming from on this.  Mostly ME2 was ME1 but with more polish.

Take the piece for Legion, for example. Starts out slow, sure. Then around 00:20 you hear that echoy sound similar to Feros, some great atmospheric chills. Then around 1:05 we start in with the driving synth sound, sort of like what you hear at Therum (only better). Then at 1:57 you get that perfect reprise of Saren's theme. Around 2:32 comes the part that's got to be one of my favorites on the soundtrack - the staccatto trumpet sound with that piano where every once in a while you hear a 'wrong' note that just adds to the fascinating horror of the derelict Reaper.

I mean, I could go on... and I could do this with many of the tracks.  Grunt is another one that kind of reminds me of the driving synth of Therum, only so much better. In fact, it reminds me a little of Uplink.

And is there really anyone here who can say they didn't have a tear in their eye the first time they heard Normandy Reborn? Or are you just ignoring the parts of that song that came wholesale from ME1?

All these pieces are so great, not because they are ignoring the soundtrack of the first game, but because they are honoring and augmenting the power of those pieces.

I too prefer ME1 soundtrack generally...though truth be told, I think the music in Arrival is about perfect for Mass Effect. It has the heavy electronic instrumentation of ME1, with fully realized musical themes and compositions, which while very interesting in ME1, were often way too short and undeveloped.

I'm very much looking forward to Mansell's work. It should be very evocative and add an emotional depth that has been somewhat lacking. That said, I don't think his style will be a return to ME1 or Arrival, but it will be leagues better than the Hollywood blockbuster vibe of ME2.

And lest anyone think I completely hate ME2 OST, I don't. It's very good! Just its moments of brilliance are few and far between, liberally interspersed with unimaginative pieces-- Suicide Mission being probably the most salient example of utterly generic tripe.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Anbody else hope that Mansell will draw inspiration from ME's classic sci-fi samples rather than ME2's cinematic themes?

Watch Moon and you'll know what the music in ME3 will be like (hint: absolutely stellar) I'm not worried in a bit. Mansell's amazing!

Moon OST general? Nursery is one of the best that and Welcome to Lunar Industries

Wow, I just... I just don't know how you could dislike Suicide Mission, or think it was generic. O_o

Just the way it's crafted is so amazing. Starting with TIM's theme, because he is the chessmaster that set things in motion, building to a more epic, Shepard-centric climax, because Shep is the living god that will win the day even against impossible odds. Then quieting down to the theme that represents human loss, the theme that runs throughout the soundtrack. Finally rousing to the martial finale. I'm listening to it as I describe it, and it STILL gives me chills. A truly wonderful piece.

It's official: I do not understand Bioware fans.

In the end, what does it matter?  Your survival depends on stopping them, not in understanding them.

All I know is I can place pieces of music from ME1. They're evocative. But ME2... with the exception of the suicide mission music, and maybe Samara's (because it's distinctive), I couldn't tell you where the rest of the music comes from.

I had the same reaction with the Mafia games. I can listen to the orchestral score (which is absolutely brilliant) for Mafia and tell you what level the music came from but for Mafia 2... not once I could I do that (granted it relies more on its comprehensive licensed soundtrack).

Rest easy.

The soundtrack for Mass Effect 3 is in this guy's hands:

Welcome to Lunar Industries (Three Year Stretch) by Clint Mansell, from the Moon O.S.T.

ME2 had to suffer because some suit idiots wanted it to have a more "epic" sound. It resulted in some really ****ty tracks, like "Delivering the Cure" and that human Reaper track. There were several great ones though, like "Samara", "Garrus", "Tali", "Collector Fever" and www.youtube.com/watch

Hate TIM. But that's an epic theme right there.

And the Collector Base track  was great as well. Fast foward to about 1:35 and stand by to be creeped out.

Your evidence for this assertion?  And no, intuition doesn't count, nor does the mere fact that EA now owns Bioware.

It's pretty obvious. This ain't the only case in which the sequel of a succesful game has to appeal more to the mainstream, and with ME2 this also affected the RPG aspects. To take an example with another franchise - Red Faction 1 and 2. Both 90% electronic, oldschool sci-fi soundtrack. Red Faction: Guerrilla - generic cinematic soundtrack. Same case with the Terminator films.
Bigger budget, more commercial presentation.

Truth be told... I honestly forget Mass Effect has any sort of music playing in the background. There isn't much of anything that stands out and I always end up walking away with the sound of gunfire and "Enemies Everywhere" looping in my head.

Nothing in Mass Effect 1 really evoked any emotional response out of me, where as Mass Effect 2's did. But that's just me. If I want good video game music, I'll go back to Majora's Mask. Now there's emotional response for ya.
