Well if what Mike Gamble said at the Community Panel at Gamescom is anything to go by, there won't be any replacements for the 'definite' squadmates.

He stated that if Garrus is dead there isn't a replacement.

@RobHuzz IIRC someone stated that the number of squadmates would equate to somewhere between ME and ME2 so I think it'll be more than 6, besides which on current listing with the 6 you mention that means the Normandy SR2 will have become the 'Loveboat', there needs to be some non-LI squadmates on there somewhere (as I have a feeling James and Vigilante will be LIs)

how do you prevent at least someone from dying?? i played thru twice first time miranda died after the boss second legion as the doors were closing after he was my tech guy all characters were loyal both times

That isn't possible, you must've had Miranda non-loyal to get her killed. I'll wager you sided with Jack during the catfight then in the run where you had Legion die had Miranda as team leader for that first part, then on the other playthrough am guessing you took her with you unless you had a weak 'hold the line' team.

Even unloyal Miranda survives leading the 2nd fire team during the biotic bubble portion of the SM and she tell TIM to stuff it if you blow up the base.  She only dies after killing baby Reaper.  Or the only way I've seen her die anyway.  Unloyal Miranda does live through hold the line.

In my "canon" playthrough Miranda was the only one who died and she died during Hold the Line.

Read a guide on it, it is not that hard to get. Infact I got everyone out alive on my first try due to dumb luck of happening to pick the right choices.

Really?  I've only lost her at the very end.  But I do think the Hold the Line is random depending on how is on the line.

yep she died on hold the line in my first playthrough as well, even after she suceeded in leading the 2nd fire team (she was unloyal), it is random but it mostly picks low armor characters

If you got your characters killed than you shouldn't be given new ones you should have to live with being a bad commander.

LOL this. VS, Liara, Tali & Garrus are already LIs. Vega and whoever will be the new female squadmate are practically granted as new LIs as well. That's already 6. Considering they've said there'll be less squadmates than in ME2 = 11 at the very max, it means more than half of the squad will be romancable lol. I think it's safe to assume all the remaining squadmates won't be LIs. Prothy for one. If anyone from ME2 returns, it will be someone like Legion or Mordin, non-LI.

On every single PT someone has died in the SM, always a different companion from the one that the previous FemShep lost. Simply want to see how this will affect ME3, how will it change if someone is dead. I do not need any replacements so that's no worry for me. But I am hoping that losing someone will give a different game in ME3. Loosing Tali, how will that affect the quarian-situation. How will Mirandas death impact the Cerberus-plot. That's why I haven't got a single FemShep who has gotten the entire crew through the SM. Will save that PT for the last one before ME3 comes out.

If loosing a companion doesn't affect the story in any way I'll be a little sad, I'm doing this for replay value. Wish to see different things in ME3.

It isn't random, there are some forumites that have worked out the pattern for it and it is mentioned in the topic...
Mass Effect 2's Suicide Mission Guide

As far as Miranda goes, out of all the squad she is the toughest to kill in that she can only be killed if not loyal and only either in the final battle or as part of the hold the line team if Jack, Mordin, Kasumi and Tali are all loyal or you've got a weak enough hold the line team to ensure you can kill 1 or 2 of them non-loyal as well as Miranda.

Like I said
previously, because I wanted to know that my worse playthrough was going
to have ramifications as far as dead squadmates (and bad decisions)
were concerned, I put the question to the Devs during the Gamescom Community Panel and they used Garrus as the example seeing as he is one of the only ones
confirmed so far as squadmate. Dead Garrus = 1 less squadmate on your
team.

Well, Bioware have already warned us that if quite a few people got killed in the SM, then we would have a difficult time in ME3. So it would make sense if it was more difficult (or impossible) to save some of the races from the reapers if the respective squadmates are dead.
