I am in the middle of Act 1 and am trying my hand at rivalmancing. I don't want to get so far into the game and find myself out in the cold instead of being romantically involved with somebody who disagrees with me. I know there are a variety of ways to achieve rivalry points, do I have to be at 100% rivalry? Should I always choose a heart option in dialogs? Thanks for any advice.

Its pretty easy tbh.
Anders: Say Mages deserve the circle
Fenris: Say you
Isabella: Be nice and make righteous choices and try to choose the nice way out
Merril: Just don't help her with her blood magic ish
and finally
Sebastian: See Fenris
Also wait a while, you don't get that deep into romance until about Act 2. If nothing has started by then, then you can start to get worried.

Also Sebastian: Be aggresive, anti-chantry and tell him constantly, that he has to reclaim his land.
Sebastian is a **** to rival, so be careful - for example: he gives +25 friendship for accepting the quest, and saying that you don't want the Kirkwall to be invaded my Divine's Army - that's act 3, you get him in the act 2, so you just need to have him at full, or simply playing a maniac. And flirt with him, while not having anyone else.
You don't have to be at 100%, 80% is sufficient, if I remember correcty. And Isabela is 50%, or even 10% - I'm not sure, I usually have her at least 50% already. She gets a lot of friendship points for flirting, so be an absolute stick if you want to rivalmance her.
Merril: you can be friendly with her - if you don't give her a tool in act 2 you get the major boost of rival points. Just flirt once or twice, and it should be alright.
Anders: one flirt in major conversation (didn't tried with only gift one) and he goes crazy on you. Enjoy your own disagreeing apostate hobo.
Ahh, yeah - I neglected Fenris. Flirt every time you'll get the heart option, and don't flirt with anyone else, just to be safe.

Oh that's easy then. Just be anti-mage freedom and pro-templar in every conversation and quest you take him on.
If you do it right you can max his rivalry by the end of act 1.
