He certainly does. The odd part is, he refuses to watch Squee's video while making very broad generalizations about its contents. Then in the very same thread he writes a long-winded post regarding the state of RPGs. Why does he expect anyone to care about his opinions when he refuses to extend the same courtesy to others? It's baffling.

That bolded bit there is all Gatt9 really cares about: posting the same lectures on the "Twu meaning of 'RPG'" and his dire prophecies for the game industry over and over and over.  Any pretext will do.  Like Terror_K, he's basically a single-issue poster, only he doesn't constantly create new threads to do it in.

@Candidate Maybe they didn't say "We want the COD players to buy our games" but they clearly hinted that they want them.

@Phaedon Okaaaaaaay....

@Chewin3 LOL, now it makes just more sense, andit sounds even stupidier that they would think that way. They're just finding excutions

Squee, I respect you and your effort, but ME isn't, never was and never will be RPGs in the sense of the term. They are, always have been and always will be hybrids.

They really didn't. A lot fo people took that quote way out of context and I think you may have got the wrong message from it. Bioware simply said they want ME3's audience to be bigger, ideally to the sort of level os success CoD enjoys. If people that buy CoD also bought ME3, it'd be vaslty successful. However, they never said or even implied that they were changing ME3 to specifically appeal to gamers who enjoy CoD, which is what you seem to be implying. They appeal to such vastly different markets that ME doesn't cover any area of the market that CoD is dominant in.

While Bioware may want CoD players to buy ME3 - and why shouldn't they? - they never said or even implied they are changing ME3 to appeal to the CoD audience. They simply want the same level of success Activision has had with the CoD brand.

I think what it all boils down to is that some players want to make their character and game as individual and customized to them as possible, and they want as many tools as possible to make it so. Whether it's choices, armor customization, weapon customization, more powers, etc.

So the less you have of these things the less players feel they can make the player theirs. BUT...what happened here that made it worse, same as with DA, was that they gave players these things in one game, and then removed (streamlined) them in the next game.

Thus you have people saying it's less of an RPG, or at least that's my theory.

Wait, really? In that case this quote has been really taken out of context. Dragon Age has even less in common with Call of Duty than Mass Effect has.

Pfft.

you're all crazy.

The ME series are clearly "Role Playing Interactive Cinematographic Choose your own Action Adventure"

Although ME2 certainly leant towards more "Interactive Cinematographic Choose your own Third Person Action Shooter"

Buts its a moot point in the larger scheme.

I'll try to find a link.  But they some of the RPG elements are similar, and if they expand upon those similarities they can expand a larger crowd.  But it wasn't just COD, they mentiond like AC and Fallout too, people just focus on COD.  But they did say if they changed the game to expand on the similarities they could draw more fans to the game.

I couldnt care less if its an RPG or not.

As long as its a fun game, im happy. And most fun games i play have some sort of RPG element in them, sure some of them arent classed as an RPG......but so what?

Game genres are blurring, the more new games come out with different elements of different genres the better imo. Why limit yourself.

That was fun! I agree completely.
I love role-playing and I am happy that I can do so in a wide variety of gameplay styles, not just the same old formula. I have been playing RPGs for years and I am happy that I am offered different flavors. Both Mass Effect games are awesome role-playing experiences in their own right and I don't feel the need to get upset, because they don't offer something other games do.

Nice video.  :)

For me I think the over simplification of inventory and the likes in ME2 strips away part of the immersion.   I suppose its subjective, but having restictions on what you can use and equip does limit customisation.   That customisation is important for individualising your character and helping you role play the game.

Its not vital. It wont stop it being an RPG. There many other things that take president as you point out.  But going back to raw basics after such depth was a little hard to get used to and I still miss it.   Thus why im glad to see a better system return again in ME3.
