After installing Win 7 64 bit on my son's PC, I had to reinstall DAO in compatability mode and run as administrator to get it to load without crashing. Now, when he saves, there's no sign of the save game files anywhere on his PC and if he tries to load there's nothing listed. It looks like it's saving, but there's just no sign of it. Any ideas? The game is updated to 1.04 and he's not running any mods.

Please see the read first thread pinned to the top of this forum for posting instructions. DAO should not require compatibility mode in Win7. We will need more information if anyone is going to be able to help you.

Sorry - thought my post had it mostly covered. Here goes:

I have the original release on disk, patched to 1.04.
Proc is C2D E7400 2.8Ghz
8GB RAM
Radeon HD 6850 1GB, BIOS version 013.007.000.006, Catalyst version 11.5
Audio chipset Realtek ALC889A
Win 7 Pro 64 bit
No mods

DAO worked fine under Win XP. After installing Win 7 and reinstalling DAO, it would crash with a runtime error whenever launched. As per recommendations I found, I deleted and reinstalled DAO with Win XP SP 3 compatibility mode and ran as Administrator, which seemed to solve everything as the game can now launch. However, it now won't save after starting a new campaign. My son gets the "saving" symbol if he quick saves or saves from the menu, but when he goes to load a save there's nothing there. Searched for saves on his PC and also couldn't find any.

Any help will be much appreciated.

My guess is that the game is saving to its root x86 folder instead of saving to your son's documents folder. You can search your harddrive for the files. The DragonAge saves have a ".dap" extension so you can search for that. I would try installing the game on an administrator account instead of using the "run as administrator" option. Run as administrator doesnt always work as it should on some Windows systems. It should not need compatibility mode. Once it has been installed it should work fine on all accounts.

Well, after several clean reinstalls, it seems to have something to do with patching the game. After a clean install, the game worked and saved with no patches. I installed the 1.04 patch and new saves weren't accessible (although saves prior to the patch were). Wiped the game and did another clean install, again, saves worked with no patches, and installing the 1.02a patch prevented saves from working. I agree it's probably changing the save location, but I don't know where, and I wouldn't know how to reset the save location even if I did, so he'll just have to play without the patches.
