Catcher in the Rye - self indulgent, unsympathetic, whiny main character who I could care less about.
BTW: The ducks are kept in Central Park Zoo during the winter.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Of the authors generally recognized as great I'm not very fond of Mr. Dickens or Mr. Faulkner.
Ah that. Certainly was pessimism/cynicism inducing, was it not?
I never understood that.
"We want to educate you to be optimists, to always see the bright side in all circumstances, so we will make you read the most miserable stories that will make you hate life and human nature."
Can you tell I had to read it in high school?

The Shack - Wm. Paul Young. Trite, and offensive in its overuse of stereotypes.

Harry Potter. Especially "Deathly Hallows".
Run it over with a lawn mower. Trust me, its fun.

There were some chapters I enjoyed reading, which were set on Tamriel, but other chapters set on the floating, titular Infernal City, felt too much like Alice in Wonderland. As a result, I found the book on the whole to be boring and stopped reading about halfway through.
I really haven't read many books I disliked simply because I immediately stopped reading if I didn't like them. I imagine many of you are referring to books you had to read for schoolwork?
Personally, I really enjoyed Heart of Darkness, As I Lay Dying, Great Expectations and Catcher in the Rye.

Or horrible in terms of content?
One of the worst written books I've read is Atlas Shrugged. I also hated the content and only persevered because I decided there was a huge irony between the infastructure in the novel and the actual message.
The worst in content is a tough call between Huntington's Clash of Civilisations, Fukuyama's The end of history and the last man, and Ferguson's Empire. I can get over annoying or discriminatory content because I dismiss the author but I cannot tolerate using counter-factuals as evidence.

Also I came across a book not too long ago which I got frustrated with, the first Wheel of Time book Eye of the World. I love the Fantasy genre but the writing style really killed it for me. It's the same reason I dumped Dune and the LoTR books. Everything is just dragged out way too much and the author focuses too much on minor details, the plot moves too slowly and nothing exciting happens for like 5 chapters. After a while I just gave up(I got about halfway mind you and they were only just beggining the journey). And with Eye of the World, most of the main characters seemed pretty generic especially those village boys(forgot their names).

I don't think I've read any of the books mentioned so far. Either I've led a charmed life or I'm about to be nominated as a dishonourable member of the illiterati.
Heh illiterati... did you make that up? It doesnt matter I am stealing it.
For me I went down the wrong path. I mentioned books that I "hated" For different reasons. I would not say they wre bad and would reccomend them to most everyone.
As far as "The Worst" book I have read I cant narrow it down to one but I am happy to make the general statement that and Expanded Universe books are pretty bad.It does not matter if its Star Wars, BattleTech, Warhammer (fantasy or 40k) or video game books but the bad heavily outweighs the good.
