Actually scratch that,there simply isn't enough data on indoctrination to say how husks are made,the fact of the matter is the reapers cull every planet of sapient life,if you go into a cave 1km into the fricken ground,it doesn't matter how hard you pound with your lasers,unless you destroy the planet you aren't getting those sapients,fixers doesn't understand what retcon means,so he throws it at everything he doesn't understand or he disagrees with,he also doesn't understand how war works,the reapers aren't the covenant,they don't go around glassing planets,they kill and harvest sapient beings,they don't simply render the planet uninhabitable.

There's more than one kind. For instance, Kenneson was indoctrinated but appeared normal, or normal enough, until the arrival project.

Saren was indoctrinated but appeared normal to everyone.

Saren, presumably, didn't become a virtual robot until the Reapers "implanted" to "strengthen [his] resolve."

However, the massive changes to Paul Grayson in the latest book could not be disguised. That indoctrination included much enhancement. I don't think we've seen that level of enhancement anywhere in the games except when Saren "dies" and Shep's attacked by what's left.
