So Will Character Customization Include Different Body Types?

It's reasonable to assume that a sequal will have more character customization options than the orignal game.

Sliders for different body types are not difficult to design. You start with a few particular 3D models and let the players use their sliders to come up with linear combinations of those few particular models, ending up with something in between. Exactly the same principle as customization of facial characteristics.

So do we have confirmation that Shepard's body type will be customizeable yet? Or confirmation to the contrary?

And if it is indeed customizable, what are your plans for your Shepards' physique?

VERY doubtful. This kind of customization royally screws up animations and cut-scenes.

This.

I also doubt that custom Sheps will have different body types in game for those reasons. Also, an obese Shepard would not make any sense. He wouldn't have been an Alliance Marine if he was out of shape.

Well, if you limit the degree of customization to a reasonable extent, then it won't.

On the other hand, the face customization of ME2 can also screw up animations and cut-scenes if a player go out of their way to design their Shepard to have bizzarre features.

The very existence of different types of weapons also pose the same problem. Artists try to make sure that weapon models don't inferfere with cutscenes, and yet you still see the Widow blocking Zaeed's face when you recruit him.

To quote an ancient Chinese proverb: just because you might choke, you shouldn't give up eating.

No need to change the body type...Shep looks fit...that's all s/he needs to be a marine....would just mess with the animations.

There are many different types of fit.

I for one want MaleShep to look like a long jumper, instead of a boxer/wrestler.

I've always wished there was just slight variation, in this and in other games like Dragon Age. I don't see why they couldn't have three options: thin, athletic, muscular. All would be acceptable for a marine/hero/active person, but it would let you have a better RP experience with your custom character. Also it would allow more variety in the NPCs both major and minor if there were more body types out there. I hate when my mages and my biotics look like they work out in the gym all day every day, just because the designers don't want to have multiple body types. Biotics supposedly would have a hard time keeping any weight on given the high energy expenditure of using their abilities.

I would like it, but the thing about the cutscenes is true. You'd need noticeable differences in things like muscle size for it to be worth putting in the game, and it would lead to silliness to see skinny Shepard go up against cover a lot and be sort of hovering an inch or two away, while bulky Shepard is actually clipping through the wall a little bit.

Eh, who knows. They may be able to make it work, but I doubt they will put it in and I don't blame them.

Fat Shepard deserves a shot at saving the galaxy. As soon as he finishes that next pie. Who are you to say otherwise? You'll just need to upgrade the elevators on the Normandy.

The adventures of fat Shepard:

::::Shepard jogs 50 feet, stops and doubles over::::

Shepard: Garrus.....(out of breath)....Liara...you two...(gasping for air)...go on up ahead...I'll (coughing)....catch up. I just...(panting)...just need to catch my breath (wheezing)....and finish. (pausing for air).. this delicious hamburger. (more wheezing)

It's a nice idea, but it won't happen.

But if it did, I'd like a slightly slimmer physique on ManShep. More supple, less bulk.

They don't do it, because they would have to do every scene with the thin, athletic and musclar variation, that is a lot of work for very minimum payoff.

I just realized. Mass Effect 2 has 13 different squad mates. Each and every one of them has a unique body shape. They all carry weapons from the same weapons set, use the same type of cover during combat, and may appear in the same cutscenes.

There are no issues whatsoever with clipping - at least not obvious ones that most people notice. The Mattock may look small on Grunt, and the Geth Pulse Rifle looks like it's falling off of Legion's back. But that's about it. And Shepard's body types won't be nearly as diverse as to resemble Grunt or Legion.

They made 13 different body types for squad mates each with individually unique models, textures and animations. I don't see why the Commander couldn't use, say, 3 or 4 different body types due to technical difficulties or budget limitations.

At the very very least, they made different models for MaleShep and FemShep, but used the same animations in ME2. That caused some problems, but nothing major. If MaleShep and FemShep can share animations, I don't see why AtheleticMaleShep and MuscularMaleShep cannot.

I want it! If they can put a lot of love into Miranda's butt, they can give more customization options for Shepard.
Like hairstyles for a start....still want those designs used for the Femshep representative.
Yes it's a lot of work, but I'm willing to wait longer for it!

That's what they say, I don't believe it.

Then explain why other games do it, but Bioware doesn't.  Skyrim's going to have body customization for pete's sake!

Saint's Row has it and it doesn't cause any problems with that game.  I call bunk!  I bet they just don't want to do it for some stupid reason.

Nor should you. Especially in a game thronged with aliens of various body plans.

And that stupid reason is 'style and scope of animations and cut-scenes.'

Though that you brought up Saint's Row as a counter is rather illustrative in and of itself...

I would gladly have body shape sliders. I would get a lot of joy if my Shep had a beer belly and be a very large to the point of almost exploding body type. Though I am biased in that I love things that go against the setting in games for humour playthrough sometimes. Like how I would love Shep to be a sock puppet in a playthrough.
