Dear Technical Support and NWN2 Community,

Please see the following issue along with my pc's associated specifications. Any assistance is appreciated!

Game Version: NWN 2  v1.23 (Mask of Betrayer, Storm of Zehi)
Game Language: English
Retail or Digital: Retail DVD /
Processor Manufacturer: Intel
Processor Type: Intel Core Duo E7200
Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
Operating System / Service Pack: Windows XP sp3.
System RAM: 3.25 gigs
Video Card Manufacturer: ATI
Video Card Model: Radeon 2400 Pro
Video Card RAM: 256mb
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst 8.881.0.0
Description: I am unable to access the Sub Races during character creation (such as "Drow" Dark Elf). I only get one option, "Moon Elf" and the other slots which should have the additional subraces contain no information, they are blank. I believe there is a corruption in the files when installation occurs, however I cannot determine where/when. Is it possible the associated files are corrupt on the purchased DVD or is there something I am doing wrong during installation? What can I do?

Here are the various steps/installation methods I have taken:
1. Installed NWN2, no updates - same problem, uninstalled
2. Installed NWN2, updated game to version 1.23 - same problem, uninstalled
3.. Disabled Trend Micro Anti Virus software, Installed NWN2, no updates - same problem, uninstalled
4.. Disabled Trend Micro Anti Virus software, Installed NWN2, updated game to version 1.23 - same problem, uninstalled
5. Disabled Trend Micro Anti Virus software, Disabled Windows Firewall, Installed NWN2, no updates - same problem, uninstalled
6.. Disabled Trend Micro Anti Virus software, Disabled Windows Firewall, Installed NWN2, updated game to version 1.23 - same problem, uninstalled
7.Disabled Trend Micro Anti Virus software, Disabled Windows Firewall, Installed NWN2, Installed, MoB, SoZ, updated game to version 1.23 - same problem, uninstalled

*Please note, I have also tried installing this program on my other pc, which runs Windows 7 64 bit, Intel Core i700 @ 3.40Ghz, 8 GB DDR3 ram, ATI Radeon HD 6670 - 1Gb DDR3 and have encountered the same issue. I used the same installation procedures above.

Any suggestions or solutions would be appreciated. I would really like to play this game.
-Chris

Sounds like a missing or corrupt or duplicate dialog.tlk file. This is found in your program files/atari/neverwinter nights 2/dialog.tlk

See if it's there...I am assuming it is.

Probably the issue is situations in "your user name/my documents/neverwinter nights 2" folder, take this folder and rename it to something else, then start NWN2 ( which makes a new folder for you ) and see if your problem continues. If this fixes it, it was some custom content you installed previously. ( if you had anything in this folder, well it was causing the problem but you can copy things over and test things out to see where the problem is coming from )

Thank you for your reply. I have attempted to resolve the issue using the steps you described, but no luck. Here are the steps I took and new knowledge gained.

1) I first checked to see if the dialog.tlk file was present in the program files/atari/neverwinter nights 2 . Yes the, dialog.tlk file is present. However, it does not appear accessible like all the other file types do. It appears in the Windows Icon that tells you the appropriate software is not present for accessing this file. Is that normal?

2) I renamed the "username/my documents/neverwinter nights 2" folder to something else, then started up NWN2. The game did create a new folder. However the problem was still present, no access to the sub races.

3) I then proceeded to compare the renamed folder, with the new folder. All of the subfolders in both the new folder and renamed folder (like "Music, Modules") contain no files. For example, in both locations, the TLK sub folder contains no files in it. Therefore I am unable to compare and look for missing files. This may be because I have not completed character creation yet, but I would assume some data should exist within these folders right? The only files that exist are the configuration settings in notepad for the game and character.

What's next?

I would start a game, if lots of stuff is missing descriptions or has wrong descriptions, the dialog.tlk file in program files/atari/neverwinter nights 2 is somehow broken (don't worry that windows cant open it, the game can.). Uninstall and reinstall I'm afraid.

2da file corruption/conflict would do that (racialsubtypes 2da).
(edit- re reading your OP I think I read it wrong, if you can select subraces but there's just no information displayed that's the dlk.tlk as mentioned, if you can't access them at all that's the 2da batch)

If you've ever had the game installed before and were using any mods, particularly a mod for removing ECL penalties say, make sure you manually delete the folders after uninstalling because the NWN installer has problems uninstalling modded games. You have to go through and manually delete all game folders afterwards, probably a good idea to run a registry cleaner like glary utilities and do a disk check too, and do a computer restart before the fresh install.

Next thing is you don't mention your hdd free space. Do you have several gig worth of hdd space? You want 15gig or more really, especially on an older system that might have questionable sectors. I get frequently orphaned files on my ancient 80gig IDE, I make sure I've plenty of free space above what any game requirements are if I'm going to install one, or else remove other programs so I do. Lack of good working clean free disk space during install can corrupt the installed files of course, your 2da batch might be only half installed and lose some files to bad sectors or something, not that I know very much about this technical side of things.

Next is your dvd drive. You know they crap themselves pretty often, last year I went though three and it didn't make any difference how expensive a brand I bought, I watch dvd movies on the computer, I really look after it but still dvd drives are throw away items that wear quick.

Pop a dvd movie into your drive and see if there's any stuttering. If there is that's your problem, replace for $40 or whatever. It aint reading the data in a smooth stream, the dvd drive will corrupt the install.

Finally is the dvd's themselves. check for scratches and authenticity. If scratched, get them polished. If reproductions (private play copies, pirated, etc.), these go bunk real easy. Toss and get the real thing for like $10 or $20 new for the full set authentic on amazon.

Steam is an alternative, cheaper than 40$ and it comes all patched and does not use the DVD drive. You should remove everything prior.

Thank you all for your replies.

Mungbean -
1) To clarify further, I can't select the subraces at all. The in game display during character creation just shows blank cells where the subraces icons/name would be. If i click on the blank cells, nothing happens, no stats change, appearance, etc. I believe this is 2da batch you mentioned.
2) Never installed the game before or mods, so no previous installation is interfering. Literally I just purchased the game, a sealed retail copy. Checked the discs and they clean.
3) I have a 1.2TB of free space on my hard drive available. Not a problem there : )
4 )I checked into your DvD drive suggestion, no problems with the drive as well.

Given that it may be the 2da batch, what can be done? Is there a way to determine if the file is being corrupted during installation, or is already corrupt on the disc?

You mention disabling the Trend Micro Anti-Virus software. Are you certain your PC does not have any other virus software running? I seem to recall posts of people having issues when running anything like that during the install.

I find it hard to believe your DVDs are the problem. I would imagine they would have other problems during install as well if they were damaged. Since you have installed several times on two different machines I don't think the DVD drives or DVD's are the problem. But I don't have a solution for you other than buy another retail copy of NWN2 Platinum or buy it on Steam.

Regards

I am having the same issue. I bought the game off of Steam. This is pretty annoying. I wanted to roll a Drow character, but the only option I am given is Moon Elf.
