My mage alsways turns off defensive casting mode by herself. And unlike other modes, it takes time during combat to reactivate this mode. What can I do about this?

Thanks!

Turn off the AI (Artificial Intelligence) completely by pressing on the button to the right of the neverwinter eye. It will turn red. Alternatively, turn on puppet mode for your mage only from the character sheet, behaviour tab. You should see the button mentioned above turn half red half blue meaning you have a mixture of no AI and AI on.

If that level of control is not satisfactory, you could try TonyKs AI mod downloadable from the vault.

If you need help with any of the above, or additional suggestions, don't be afraid to ask.

There's also some other options that are less extreme than that. You can specifically turn off the use of modes on the behavior tab for each character. Then the mage would not turn the mode on or off themselves. You can also turn off the AI using spell-casting (I always do) so that you can manage that yourself.

Thanks, I couldn't recall how to fine tune since I rarely do other than puppet mode.

Umm, there's only the "rest" button to the right of the eye. And I have puppet mode on but it doesn't help.

Immediately right of the rest button is another small button.  That's the one.

Once you get use to all the options in the GUI of Neverwinter Nights, you'll find it hard going back to less.  But getting use can be a small challenge.

Click on the thumbnail below.  The symbol you are looking for looks like a tick-tac with 2 upside down square brackets in it.

If I'm reading this right, Mr. Kolikeos is talking about a different problem.

To wit, when you go to a new area, your spellcasters turn off Defensive Casting Mode. As you play more, you will note that other Modes get "forgotten" as well, as does a Bard's Inspiration.

I don't think this has ever been solved - if it has, I would welcome a pointer to the solution. In the meantime, I just put the favored Mode of every character on button "0" and try to remember to turn them back on after area transitions. This is an okay workaround...

... except it's a real pain in the neck in SOZ where there are many, many more transitions.

Ah, if that's the problem, report it to Skywing; he may be able to do something about it. The Client Extension fixes Darkvision getting turned off on transition and perhaps Bard Inspirations as well (unless that's Kaedrin's pack).

foil-, what's GUI?

And the button in the picture doesn't exist in my version of the game. Perhaps I need to update it or something? Where can I do that?

GUI = graphical user interface.

To update, launch the game and press the "Update" button from the lauchner (not the game itself or its main menu, the one which says "Play", "Toolset", etc).

I sort of had a gut fealing that was the case from your second post, which is why I posted the picture.

Give yourself some time.  Its a very long update with lots of downloads.  It will also let you play without the disk after you are fully updated (version 1.23).  And I beleive you will have more options for character behaviour after the update as well.

I prefer the Steam Version for this game since its already fully updated and using the ALT-TAB keys to get back to the desktop seams a little more stable and faster on my computer.  Plus, it has the very cool Storm of Zehir expansion pack included which gives a couple extra classes and the animated overland map.

Sorry about the undefined acronym.

Ok thanks. Should have done that when I first started playing.
