I recently installed ME1 after much recommendation from friends. I spent about 3 hours finding workaround after workaround for this game to even start. When I open the game, I get the dev videos, then the "Mass Effect Press Any Key To Start" page. When I do press a key, it scrolls across the planet, then freezes and crashes on the fade out. I've only found one mention on any forum google has cached, where the problem spontaneously fixed itself for no apparent reason. Here's the typical crash log:

I'm assuming it's something to do with the failure to open files. I checked the relevant folder, and can't find the upk the log mentions in the folder, so that's probably the reason, but I'm not sure how to fix it. I'm not running through steam. Before you suggest it, I have the latest graphics drivers, updated my audio drivers, have the 1.02 patch, etc. Can anyone help me?

EDIT:
Here's my system:
ASUS G53JW laptop with.....
Intel Core i7 Q740
6GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M
No sound card

I have DirectX 11 installed, as well as various versions of 10 and 9

EDIT2:
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, so the installer failed for me, so I had to manually unrar all the packages in the DVD. That might have something to do with it.

It's an old game, and nVIDIA has lost its magic touch with drivers the last couple of years. The only guaranteed to work Geforce driver has the number 250-something, maybe 256, 258. I've given up, for now, on nVIDIA.

I think that could indeed be the problem. I personally had no problems whatsoever installing the game on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I just installed ME from disk(really old disk from the hard black box bought several years ago) without any issue on a Win7 32bit and 64bit within the last 2 weeks, so I have to wonder if all the problems installing have more to do with a EA/Steam/production change issue than a game issue........now on to your question..

One,  have you verified that it is updated.

two,  it looks like a file with the male shep is causing an issue like it may be corrupted.

three, is this a value games edition or how did you buy the game?  It seems the value games edition has some errors and a dl from origin can be aranged and sometimes fixes the issue.
