And I also dislike if they are not cannon, or they are altering the universe. So if they stick to canno, fanfiction can provide pretty amazing addictions to ME story.
But some fics are really amazing and you can easily say that those pepole have some writing experience and more importantly they know how to create story. Like Mass Effect - Newton first law. That one was seriously amazing.
So I only read FemShep and normal definitely not kinky stories, but the Sheploo finally got S/S options and well yeah...

I would just like to link my particular series up just for giggles. It's a renegade femshep/liara story. It is...slightly left of canon.

I read quite a lot of fanfiction (although not a ton of ME fanfiction) and I've become quite picky at what I bother to read, often abandoning a fic after a few bad grammatical mistakes, because the fic doesn't have a setting that interests me, or just because a fic doesn't feel right. Moreover, I like long fics (preferably 100,000+ words) which tend to be in the minority for obvious reasons. This is all to say that I browse through a lot of fics but would only recommend a very, very small minority of them.
ravynwriter's (Melaradark's) Dark Energy series is definitely among my recommendations for ME fics. Closing in on 600,000 words, this retelling of the game stories is among the longest fics I've read but that didn't stop me from devouring it over a period of 4 days or so. You know you're pretty much hooked to the story when you're tired and planning to go to bed at 10 PM, but find out that it's 4 AM when you finally drag yourself to bed. The big draws for me have been a surprisingly well-written femShep, an interesting romance (femShep/Liara), and enough deviation from canon to keep the story fresh. The writing is solid throughout and I can overlook the few recurring grammatical mistakes easily enough. Even the fight scenes don't become monotonous, which is no small feat considering the source material. The fics go a bit over the top and stretch believability at times (just like the games) but the fics are just so much fun that I don't mind.
Another author whose fics I want to recommend is sinvraal. She does another retelling of the first two games, this time with the femShep/Kaidan pairing although the romance is once again hardly the only thing going for the story. She focuses on off-camera moments to flesh out the characters in the story and the chapters are from the POV of different characters. However, she doesn't write from Sheppard's point of view, leaving some mystery for the main character and developing her through other people's eyes. In any case, her writing is excellent throughout and she really gets the characters and their voices right.
My final recommendation for now is AssaultSloth's Interstitium. This fic focuses on ME2, told from the viewpoints of numerous different characters. The writing is fantastic and the characterization pretty much perfect. I honestly can't do it justice by trying to review it, suffice to say it's one of the best fics from any fandom I've read. The only real negative I have is that it's a WIP that doesn't progress at a blinding pace, but thankfully it's not abandoned.

I have a complicated relationship with novelizations. I can't quite put my finger on what makes or breaks one for me. At first I thought it was that some of them seem to take forever to get anywhere, but then I remembered that The Beautiful Indifferent is 6 chapters and nearly 60k words into ME1 and Shepard's not even a Spectre yet and I have devoured every single word of it. I'm not even considering poor characterizations or grammatical/spelling mistakes, since those are deal breakers for me even on one-shots, but I just can't quite articulate what makes a novelization compelling to me...
I think I started that one but noticed it was a WIP that hadn't been updated in a year. Generally speaking, I try to avoid abandoned fics although some are so good I still read them.

Yeah, I found it a little over a year ago when it was still 4 chapters and wound up writing the author, begging them to continue the story. They wrote back, so I know it's not a matter of no longer being alive or anything. They've even gone back through and given Dr. Chakwas her canon first name (I'm guessing, 'cause I don't remember there ever being any references to "Karin" in the original).

I will be posting it on FanFiction.net when their draconian two day waiting period for submissions ends saturday, until then it is on my BSN blog: http://social.biowar...842/blog/212978
Here's a small sample:
Two Blue Suns were firing on a cluster of prisoners near the main airlock that led to the upper walkway network and the only viable way off the ship. Tara unholstered the rifle that she had taken off the merc she had killed a few minutes before, slipped into cover, and took aim. Her body recognized the sniper rifle as soon as the hand-guard contacted her palm, as she focused her aim, nanomachines coursed through her body, responding to her unique neurological signs of imminent long range combat. The nano's blocked alkaloids, lowered her heart rate, controlled her breathing and enhanced her vision 10-fold, all while filtering out stressful background noise. In this state of unnatural zen, Tara finished aligning a perfect shot, her hands as steady as any bipod or shooting rest. The trigger of the sniper rifle broke at a crisp 2.5 pounds, sending a 12.7mm fin stabilized tungsten round through the skull of the first merc and into the next one. Both dropped within milliseconds of the each other.

Personally I don't like femshep, just not my thing. I'm not putting down people who do, but its not me. Problem is most stories I come across are femshep.
Does anyone recommend any good maleshep stories? I don't want him paired with another male character please.
I am thinking of writing a story myself, but I'm not sure how it would turn out. My idea is Shepard raised my Samara. If anyone wants more details let me know and I'll post more here.

Interstitium, which I recommended a few posts ago is a fantastic maleshep story.

^ Best of the best, really. Can’t recommend highly enough.
I just started mine, hoping to get anywhere near the quality of ravynwriter’s work. Link is in my signature, for the curious.

Pre-Mass effect Shepard Cause and Effect
first game Shepard Newton's First Law
They are long but so worth the read. There is also Newton's Second Law but I'm still working my way through the first.
I also have my own fic Affected Although I'm not all that quick to update.

Hopefully my dyslexia don't turn too many people away from my stuff, and I always love constructive criticism
While your at it I also recommend reading Jake Shepard's own side of the Samara Fanfic because the two series are intertwined and will progress a relationship between the two, and I've got some huge plans for these fanfics, totally hope to pull off some great gut punching stuff

The best story about Kelly you'll ever read.
And yes, I am being completely objective by claiming that.
I also wrote a short one that I believe will make you laugh.
I would recommend more, but they've already been recommended.
Dark Energy. Newton's Laws. Can't find better stories than those.
In addition; you should read the Treatises I have on my profile. If you're looking to be a better writer, read them! Yes, I am that arrogant. But trust me on this one, I've been reading fanfiction since the rec.arts.anime.creative days and the only internet was through AOL.
