I suspect he's the main character for a shooter spin-off in the ME universe and they are introducing him here. If he has a plot shield that ensures he lives regardless of the choices Shephard makes then my theory is correct.

Matt Damon or Micheal Fassbender would be GODLY but Vega still looks like a douchebag. Make him look presentable and handsome, then we'll talk. Fassbender in Mass Effect! EPIC!!!

James Vega is the protagonist of Mass Effect 4, or whatever comes next. Shep's going to symbolically hand the reigns over to him at the conclusion of ME3. It makes perfect sense. ME has been becoming more and more vanilla TPS, and Vega is a pretty vanilla TPS stock character. Pefect new protagonist for the new direction, and ME3 is the perfect opportunity to establish him as the new hero.

I frickin' love Michael Fassbender. I can't imagine his voice coming out of Vega's model, though.

I love the "Ashley's Squad" theory, though. That would be really interesting. Though whether he knows her or Kaidan or not, it could be that he's just on your ship standing guard when you and Anderson vamoose after the trial is interrupted, and he and whoever else is on there just agrees to come along because, y'know, Reapers destroying the crap out of earth and all that.

Yeah, I've gotta kinda agree with this from what we've seen of him so far. But maybe--hopefully--that will not turn out to be the case once we see him more up close and personal. Sometimes, a voice and great writing can make you not give a flying crap what the character looks like, you just want to get close to him (I'm talking about Garrus in ME1.)

Everyone just thinks Vega is a douche because of the faux hawk, but truth be told they could easily pull him off as a badass, which would be refreshing. I can't think of any bad ass humans in the ME series, and I'm praying Vega fills that role. For the love of God, don't give us another Kaidan/Jacob. That picture of Vega in armor is promising.
