Once the firepower pack came out, I no longer use the sniper rifle for anyone other than my soldier and my infiltrator who have that weapon by default anyways. The Mattock is a borderline sniper rifle as it is when you get the accuracy upgrade. It's practically too powerful, a virtual win button. My roommate just recently started playing again after a long hiatus and he downloaded it and he actually went back to using the default weapons because the Mattock made the game too easy in his opinion.

Ah yeah? I like to use the default assault rifle. It feels like the correct weapon for Shepard.

Same thing for Predator-pistol. I just pefere it.

I guess I cheat somewhat as I use the Mattock but I do that more based on I just like how it sounds than it being overpowered.  I like the "handcannon" you get from Mordin.  Good damage, easy to aim.  The FIrepower pack pistol does lots of damage too but for some reason I was suffering from a learning curve of sorts trying to aim the laser sight on it.  I got used to it but I prefer the simplicity of the handcannon crosshair.

Yeah, the laser-sight can throw you off. I guess I just like to shoot fast with my guns.

Sniper Rifles.. yeah.. I've never used a sniper rifle since ME1, why would I start now?

This topic just makes me giggle like this  for the nonsensed assumptions that everyone plays like he does :P

Or maybe it made no sense how one of the galaxies best and most highly trained soilders couldn't use an assault rifle, shotgun and sniper rifle. Also you've never used the Phalax or Locust have you?

The Phalanx is awful...... I much prefer the Predator or Carnifex. And the Locust is good, but I'll take a Mattock or Revenant over it any day.

I'd say the opposite I don't mind the Predator but the Carnifex is useless.

Phalanx <3<3<3

I want a gun mod in ME3 that replaces your reticle with a laser sight like the Phalanx but for all guns!

I'm even going to roll with shotguns for my Infiltrator. The sneak attacks will be awesome.

I took shotgun on Infiltraitor once, was awesome, especially when your squad mates die and it's just you.  Enemies just stand around looking lost when you're cloaked and you could just walk to them and take them out.

I would imagine that AR/SG or AR/SR will be the best weapon combo. Vanguards and Infiltrators will just use AR/SR/SG.

Psh, I'll be using 3 pistols. Yes, you can do that.

I'm sure they can make up some excuse for the 3rd to be put near omni-tool and be fired that way.  It would fit the awesome theme they have going for it.

I see what you're trying to ask, OP and I have wondered the same myself.

For example, is there any reason why I would use the SMG over the AR? In ME2, the SMG was just a poor man's AR and I haven't seen everything that would change that in ME3.

The question makes sense if you assume the weapons are all tuned the same as they were in ME2. Given the mod system, I'm assuming this is not the case.

Locust was pretty good, imo.

But I still fail to see why anyone would go for pistols in this one.

I don't really see the point in taking pistols along. Unless their functionality has been increased for ME3.

I'm going to make a wild guess that weapon classes have been rebalanced a bit. Otherwise yes, no one would take the pistol outside of trying to add a challenge or something.

I do agree SMGs and pistol might become a bit redundant, unless BW do some changes.

Shields/Barriers are quite weak on most enemies (even on insanity they're not so strong) and can be dropped with an assault rifle. Any enemy with armour protection can be dealt with a sniper rifle.

So, yeah, along with powers, unless the opponents in ME3 are beefed up a lot, the pistol and SMG are quite useless. I think most people won't use them and take a squadmember who does.

Hopefully they'll have some unique mods or something to make them useful.

Will the Claymore still be limited in who can use it, like in ME2? I hope so...

I have considered the mods but I still can't really see how this will have the SMG match the AR unless we have some overpowered mods that will greatly increase the accuracy and firepower which would basically still make a modded SMG somewhere close if just a little above an unmodded AR.

Excluding mods, each weapon besides SMG has a place:

Sniper - Long Range

Shotgun - Close Range

Assualt Rifles - Medium/Long Range

SMG - Uhh.. Medium/close range but with poorer accuracy and firepower unless you use mods.

I was hoping that the vanilla SMG will have better accuracy (like the awesome Locust) than the vanilla AR or perhaps it was "lighter" which means I have a 50% higher storm speed hence a balance. Otherwise, we'll need one overpowered mod to make me consider the SMG over the AR.

So my question basically remains: What advantages will the SMG have over the AR? Faster rate of fire? Better accuracy? Less recoil? etc etc.

A barrel mod (increased damage) and a new mod that I probably shouldn't talk about just yet... but it's not really what you might think of as standard, and it works very well against groups of enemies.

It's a hard choice though, since there's also a really nice melee upgrade you can get...
